2/21 build – setting up ladders to build new climbs in the Bouldering Project building to help boulderers build muscles and skills

Just down the MBT bike trail from here, my flag of the day was for Fort Myer Construction. When I was checking the website to get the spelling right (since a flag blowing at a distance is hard to read), I learned the company’s tag line is “Building the American Dream for DC, Maryland and Virginia.” But I’ll stick with my bouldering photo.

    2/21/24 – BUILD

I remember when the Wilson Bridge & National Harbor were built, it’s been awhile now.

I was there today. Here’s a pic of the  ferris wheel that went up when National Harbor was built. It was a beautiful  day today.

    2/21/2024 build

Sunset over Reston National Golf Course. In 2012 the owners of RNGC initiated an effort to redevelop the golf course into a mixed use residential community. This would have allowed them to BUILD residential housing on the golf course land. Opposition by Rescue Reston, a grassroots community organization dedicated to preserving Reston’s open space, has been successful to date at preserving the golf course’s designation of private recreational use acreage, specifically as a golf course.

2/21/24 BUILD Upon returning the street treat (found her drivers license on the ground), I look forward to the opportunity to BUILD a new friendship and bring a relatively new Arlingtonian into the bike community. Serendipity.

What surprised me is how they are everywhere, including at the airport, ready to play right when you step off the plane.

I well remember a trip I took with my children, then 6 and 4. Children weren’t supposed to be within something like 50 feet of a slot machine. I was pretty sure nowhere in Las Vegas was more than 50 feet from a slot machine!

And it didn’t help that my son was absolutely fascinated with the slot machines. He was totally convinced that if you used just the right movements, you would always win. Of course, he couldn’t operate the machines himself, so I had no way to show him that his theory wouldn’t work.  If I lost, it was clearly because I didn’t follow his instructions carefully enough.

This came to a head when I had to buy something in a drugstore. Of course the drugstore had a slot machine in it. And while I was focusing on what I needed to buy, my son escaped and went off to the slot machine. He would put a penny into it. Since the machine didn’t take pennies, the penny would come right back out. So in his mind, he won every time.

Next thing I knew, I was being hunted down by the store’s security guard, because my underage son was playing the slot machine. And I got no sympathy at all for the fact that a) I was a harassed mother of two small children, trying to get anything done in a city which put forbidden machines in front of them at every turn, and b) my son was not in any meaningful sense playing the slots.

I could hardly wait to get out of Las Vegas!

@kbikeva – I guess that’s why I don’t get many points. I just look for pictures that will work and take a picture of it. I don’t really put much effort into the framing of the picture. I put more effort into the caption.

I have the same issue. And the net result is that I often gain no points for ideas I think are brilliant, but get them for ones I think of as very ordinary.

I’m not complaining–the sponsors have been clear about what they are looking for, and they have the right to run any sort of competition they want. I, of course, would have the option not to participate if this bothered me.  And coming up with ideas, then going out and looking for things, is fun and gets me some extra miles. But I recognize that I’m unlikely to win, because the competition calls for an artistic sensibility and a way of looking at things that I just don’t have.

@alana    I’m sorry if you’re frustrated. This is why we do two games — the participation game, where your hashtag is your proof that you searched and found something to illustrate the word, and the main prize game on the forum, where we are primarily looking for extraordinary photos. Captions can be funny and add to it, but first we’re looking for those photos that draw us back to them. We actually spend quite a bit of time going over them.

My frustration this time has been with the very strange words that Wordle has generated, but this group has really risen to the occasion and come up with some very clever combinations of a nice photograph and good caption. So if I was playing, I’d probably be frustrated from that end of things.

Thank you for continuing to play.

@AlanA & cvcalhoun same. I’ve been trying to take better composed pictures – and/or edit them later to get them to be prettier, but it feels like getting anywhere in this game is pretty much unattainable.

It doesn’t help to see names listed at the bottom of the list of people who are getting points under “don’t give up.” What does that mean for the rest of us? I hadn’t been considering giving up – but 🤔🤷🏻. I was never looking to win, but I  don’t love the feeling of being ignored either (cuz I do put thought into what I choose to take pictures of, and what I say about them.) Yeah people can run games any way they like, but I find this way not so much fun to play.

Unlike the Freezing Saddles team leaderboard–where it’s very hard to make a dramatic shift in rankings just a few weeks into the season–the photo main game is one that could really be anybody’s till pretty late.

I like that Freezing Saddles has so many different prizes and weird data rankings. I know I won’t ever be anywhere near the top of the individual leaderboard in points or miles (at least not before retirement) or speed (ever), so it’s neat to have a chance at something random like photos or bingo or rainiest rider as encouragement to get outside.

As a co photo game runner from last year, I’ll attest that it’s really hard to pick one or a few photos each day since they all bring a little something different to the game. And that’s what makes it fun to play along, seeing how interpretations range from the literal to the ironic to the obscure.

    @Nadine – I’m sorry you’re frustrated.

Although Serdar and I are working together on this, I’m speaking only for myself and how I approach this.

I’m staying up each night until midnight in order to solve the Wordle and post it on the forum. Serdar and I are constantly looking at the photos during the day and going back and forth on what appeals to us. Sometimes we’re on the same page, sometimes it takes us a day or two to agree. We are spending hours on this “game” even knowing it’s just a game.

With the updates, I was trying to avoid listing every single name of every person who is playing. It also seemed to me to be a bit patronizing. We’ll change that this week and add every name of every player.

We do look at every single photo, more than once — and we’re having to bounce back and forth between here and Strava because some people are still posting there. See the previous paragraph about staying up until midnight already and hours spent on our end of the game.

We are not purposely ignoring anyone. For example, your photos clearly and repeatedly show that you’re having a great time getting out with friends and riding together. We see that and we are happy for you that you’re doing that.

One of the downsides of the “new forum” is it makes it very difficult to comment specifically, quickly, and directly on photos which is where I would have (in the past) commented and encouraged.  I would love to add a quick comment to every photo, but the way it runs now, doing so just adds to the scrolling down problem and because the comments don’t end up right next to the photo, they seem like they’re out in la la land. That issue has deterred me from commenting on individual photos, so perhaps it has seemed like being ignored. I’ll try to do better on that. Be sure to check the entire scroll to see if you’ve gotten the notice you’re seeking.

And now, I’m finished commenting on this whole subject and going back to looking at photo submissions again for a bit before I go for a ride. No Bingo items for the 4th day in a row, no more fire stations within a reasonable distance from my house. I’ve “done” the public art in my area if not this year, past years. Thank goodness for @BigRedBoiler and the flag game – at least I have a purpose in life each day.
