Signed up. Remember ride often. Unless you are Boomer. Miles/Kms ridden on the wrong side of the road in the British Isles are, of course, not counted.
I will do my best to visit the DC area to ride in pain and discomfort with all of you. Although, given the fact that summer is now in full swing through March/April, I will ride and work on my tan throughout all of BAFS this coming year. :p
Boomer is starting Dreary Saddles a year round English cycling contest. Riders are penalized 1 million points if the sun is actually out on a ride.

What if you happen to live and work from home?
If I’m accepted to play, I have to put some slicks on one of my mountain bike so my mileage isn’t embarrassingly low!
I telework sometimes. It turns out that my apartment is anywhere from 4 to 30 miles away from my apartment on telebikecommute days.

, but if this is geared primarily for road mileage, I can bow out.
You’re fine. If you check out this link, you’ll see that 8 miles at a time, 4 days a week, times 13 weeks would have put you comfortably above the bottom in last year’s competition. And because we balance teams among the hypercompetitive and the wimps, you benefit your team if you bike more miles than expected given your history, even if you don’t bike more miles than the top players. (When you’re a newbie, we expect very little of you; after that, what we expect is what you did the preceding year.)
TL;DR You’re fine. Stay in the competition.

Isn’t the above contraption a unicycle? I thought those didn’t count on account of the weirdos that ride them.

I would have loved that contraption back when I lived in the upper midwest in the 80s, but the fat bike hadn’t been invented yet, and the rear wheels of mountain bikes always bogged down in the snow unless you were on a well packed snowmobile trail.
Anyway, I think the motion to ban unicycles on account of weirdness failed to be seconded and was tabled.

ParticipantSadly I am out of the running before the competition starts this year, due to bunion surgery on my foot last week. I will be recovered in time to join in the end-of-competition festivities and will be coming back strong in 2018, though!

Just putting this out there to get the “discussion” started.
Feel free to refresh yourselves on some of the ideas we had last year.

We expect some mountain top finishes from you to at least get some respectable temperatures. Maybe HuascarĂ¡n, I’m not sure the Renegade can climb that slope, get a fat bike and don’t forget your oxygen bottle.
Working on my fitness as we speak… but funny you should mention HuascarĂ¡n…

@Judd, I like the idea of Dreary Saddles. It also involves imbibing warm beer… or so I am told.November 23, 2016 at 7:52 pm #1060829CPTJohnC

I will also point out that I recently managed to accidentally leave my cell phone (with its GPS) at home when I went biking in Virginia. I printed out a map from Google maps, but what with the whole “no street signs” thing, I was losing my way anyway. But I was trying to get to Chain Bridge Road, which is a big street, so it couldn’t be that hard, right? I asked four people in a row where it was. I didn’t need a specific address, just, “What’s the quickest way to any part of Chain Bridge Road?” Not one person could tell me.
That’s because to a Virginian, the proper question is “how do I get to 123?” street names are for squares. (we also have a penchant for re-aligning roads, then keeping the street name but adding the word ‘old’ to the beginning, such as Old Chain Bridge Road, Old Lee Highway, Old Braddock Road (just to name a few). That said, I don’t actually think MD is any better in terms of marking streets (I drive in both places pretty regularly). Give me the Grid plus spokes of DC anytime.

I’m sorry, but if we exclude all the weird people, we won’t have enough left for even one team.
