Some of the highlights:
Followed Ian Fingerman’s advice about making friends, “Everyone here likes bikes, just talk about bikes.” Talked about bikes, made lots of friends.
2017 Goals
Centuries in 5 more states
Ride 11,000 miles in 2017
Try bikepackingI had fun riding with you this year! While I’m not sure I can make RAGBAI work this year, I’d love to join you on some of your goals!

Get more women involved in racing (MTB, gravel, & cross)We might need to talk. I’m cross-curious

Next year, I want to do the Montgomery County loop.
That looks cool! Since its local that might be something that could be organized into an option for a group…

hmm, won’t match what some folks do , but here goes
Nonsense! You put in an amazing year considering where you were at the start of BAFS last year! I’m proud to have you as a “Hey Nineteen” teammate!

since I will be moving sometime near the end of summer 2017, get immersed in Seattle’s bike culture
What?! NOOO!!! You will be missed. We must ride together again before you depart.

I’m with you. I increased my riding from about 30 miles a week to about 125 miles a week in 2016, and hope to continue at the higher level. But by the standards of this group, I’m clearly a wimp.
Not at all! Sometimes its a matter of time and schedule. I live close enough to where I need to be at any given time that sometimes its hard to come up with excuses for miles.

I’m totally in for biking around the beltway.
We should do this. Dressed as bandits or something.

Legend tells of a magical land called Hains Point. They say it is a cyclist’s paradise… close… low traffic… flat… mileage customizable to available time. Legend has it that if you visit in the evening between 6 and 7 p.m. that you might even cross paths with the King of Hains Point, King J. Lumberack I, the Beneficent.

The second “j” is really silent

It’s actually pronounced:
loom – BEAR – awkh (with that phlegmy “kh” at the end)

Participant2016 Highlights
- Surpassed my goal of averaging an English Century a week (in miles, not in centuries) for the year with 5,243.8 mi on the bike and nearly a quarter of a work year in the saddle.
- Rode more miles in 2016 than any previous year.
- Enjoyed 88 Rides ending in or involving coffee, 71 of which were coffee clubs
- Retired my trusty Mt Shasta Capella after a quarter century of service due to a frame crack
- Got a new Surly Ogre to keep on rolling in August and exceeded 2,000 miles on it by the end of the year
- Had my second highest mileage month ever in December and 3/4 of my highest mileage months were in Winter
- Had perfect attendance for the first time in Freezing Saddles riding 1,410 miles.
- Took the time to stop more on my rides – for coffee, for conversation, to take in the scenery, to reflect.
- Taught my daughter to ride a bike under her own power.
- Rode in temperatures from 3F to 101F (higher heat indexes) during rain, tropical storms, blizzards, stinging sleet, high wind, and glorious sunshine.
- Rode with a Fairfax County Supervisor
2017 Goals- Have another record mileage year on the bike.
- Take more days off work to ride long rides.
- Get my daughter more comfortable on her bike and go on more rides with her.
- Do a bike overnight with my daughter, try to get a mini-tour in for me.
- Keep stopping to enjoy where I am.
- Get a century (or more) in.

Wait… so THIS is what came out of the #BikePresident campaign? That tears it, democracy is dead.

ParticipantOn New Year’s Eve I compare the year’s mileage to those on my bike. For the fifth year in a row, the bike came out victorious!

In 2015 I broke my ankle, in 2016 I broke my wrist. Sigh. That explains why the bike miles are low those two years; I cannot explain why the car miles correlate so strongly with the bike miles though.

Car miles were down those years too. Is that from moving?

I’m assuming that a broken wrist or ankle would impair your driving as well as your cycling.

Nope, in the same apartment bldg since 2008. It helps that the Pentagon City area keeps growing in terms of amenities (Whole Foods!!!). I also use and abuse Amazon Prime so very little need to go to stores.
Also, my vacations in 2015 were overseas and HI so I didn’t use my personal car. In 2016 I didn’t go on any vacations; first time in my life I spent every night in my own bed.

Yeah, esp since they both occurred at the beginning of the summer so I was down and out during the nice weather. Was.not.fun.

ParticipantI’ve been giving this a lot of thought the past several days, and while I’m clearly coming at this from a different point than a lot of folks here, so these may not seem like overly ambitious for many, everyone’s gotta start somewhere, right?
2016 Highlights
Commuted via bicycle at least one way each day I went to work since mid-April (It’s only 2.6 miles, mostly downhill, to get to work.)
Started to keep track of my mileage on Strava
Rode just over 600 miles for the second half of the year2017 Goals
90%+ participation (ride at least 70 days) during Freezing Saddles

Cross a state line on bike
Ride the MBT north of Catholic U
