GCGF is a fantastic ride. I would do that again over any other organized ride/race I have done to date. The scenery is just fantastic and the climbs (and the descents) are epic. What a blast. 16.5k feet in 120ish miles is pretty phenomenal. Highly recommend.

ParticipantFor anyone new to the forum or feeling unaccomplished in biking for 2016, this image is what this bike forum does to a person (note: I joined the forum in 2012):

Stay on the forum, and you’ll eventually start riding more, joining more clubs, doing coffee clubs, happy hours, Freezing Saddles, the National Bike Challenge, and more until you have no idea how you ever did so much biking. Also, use this Strava multiple ride mapper tool to see all of your rides combined together on one map: http://www.jonathanokeeffe.com/strava/map.php
Here’s my DC-area map for 2016 rides:
I look forward to hearing about all the new riding everyone does in 2017. Do your best, and keep at it!

I’ll second that thought. I biked 1,880.7 miles in 2013, before I found the forum and started participating in Freezing Saddles. I haven’t biked less than 3,000 miles in any year since then. And by 2016, I was up to 4,258.4 miles for the year.
When I started, biking to DC and back required many rest stops, and took way too long to do it on any kind of regular basis. I’m now managing the 25-mile round trip on a daily basis, without needing rest stops at all.

I love all the family biking achievements even if they involve death marches and freezing cold. The best of my childhood all involves spending time with my dad.
How are the carbon wheels? Do I need some?
Yeah my brother and I did quite a bit of riding as kids with my mum, and quite a few of those involved complaining on steep uphills, as well as McDonald’s as a destination/reward (we never ate out much). I never realized until I got a Garmin that the area I grew up riding in was basically Kill Bill terrain. There were also a couple of rides with friends which by today’s standards were a bit foolish – mostly involving riding cheap MTBs in busy traffic lanes in 100F with no water/food/phone/etc.
Crabon wheels – not really sure, not real miles on them yet. Just always wanted some (more for the aesthetic than anything…) especially since I finally bought a bike with a carbon frame and finally pulled the trigger on a Black Friday deal.

ParticipantShort but sweet:
2016 –
Did more cycling, started commuting regularly in all weather in November
Finished first century
n+1
Edit: obviously joined Bike Arlington and signed up for my first ever BAFS2017 –
Edit: BAFS!!!
Some idiot in this thread or another posted about Garrett County Gran Fondo and now I need to do that epicness. I’m going to die!
Continue commuting regularly
5,000 miles total riding (higher if possible)
At least one metric century every month, hopefully a full century
Get in shape, complete Chattanooga Ironman in September (semi cycling goal)
Start to convince wifey of (n+1)+1 for 2018January 2, 2017 at 9:08 pm #1062489Brett L.

Love this post. Probably what’s going to happen to me as well! Makes me feel a little less cycling crazy – I’m starting to drive people nuts with my newfound cycling obsession.

Were would you place it in relation to Mountains of Misery? MoM has the added benefit of a trip to Blacksburg, but then again, I never need a reason to return to Blacksburg.

Only if you’re on my BAFS team. I don’t want to motivate the enemy, especially if you’re on the wrong side of the Potomac!!

You have to keep your enemies close. Steve O’s a pretty good guy and was one of the first people to welcome me into the biking community. My life is mostly better for it.
