Participant2016 highlights:
– Accompanying my wife on her first organized ride (Seagull metric century, which I did fixed)
– Hearing “we thought she didn’t know what biking was” from my daughter’s camp counselor at hearing we biked from DC to Alexandria to get the bus
– Crushing my previous mileage total for Freezing Saddles
– Watching the number of families biking to the kids’ school explode and knowing that I helped inspire many of them
– Getting caught in a really cold rainstorm we totally weren’t prepared for and the kids owning it and having fun anyway2017 goals:
– More rides with friends
– Organize a fundraising ride for Trash Free Maryland (you all are invited)
– More family rides when the kids are on their own bikes
– Stretch goal – I’ve biked to every property that I manage EXCEPT the one in Pikesville MD. I should fix that.December 30, 2016 at 4:04 am #1062312dkel

I no longer have need of any personal goals.

Participant2016:
-Rode with my family (wife’s first riding in 10 years or so, and my older kid learned to bike – and I promptly took him on 20 mile deathmarch which hasn’t been repeated).
-PRs on various climbs I’ve done before, felt like I was off the pace on those rides but good to know I have actually improved despite less mileage/ageing/beer/etc.
-closer to have better/fuller bike kit wardrobe
-bought first set of crabon wheels. whoooosh!2017 Goals:
-Buy a crabon crankset and ‘gram it.
-More srsly, just get over various injuries from 2016, and learn to handle bike better/more confidently.December 30, 2016 at 7:02 am #1062314drevil
Participant2016 Highlights:
- Bikepacked at the GW National Forest on some ridiculously hard trails and froze my butt off at night
- Gave in and finally got a full suspension bike, rediscovering comfort and speed on rocky trails, after primarily mountain biking rigid singlespeed for the last 15 years.
- Got over a 37″ log
- Beat some of my faster buddies at the Single Speed USA race in stupid hot conditions
- Won the Fat Bike category at Wakefield @ Wednesday race series (nevermind that there were hardly any – or no – competitors in some of them
)
- Got up a tight switchback at Wakefield, inspiring others to try, but not sure anyone else has been successful
2017 Goals:
- More bikepacking
- Be able to bounce on my front wheel only, like this
- Do the C&O in a day (my only attempt, 11 years ago on a fixie Karate Monkey)
- Try more stupid/silly stuff on the bike and not get (too) hurt

Made even more amazing bike friends
Crushed my initial yearly mileage goal (4,800) by a lot (over 6,300!)
Have ridden every day since December 30, 20152017 Goals:
Ride every day during Freezing Saddles (keep the streak alive!)

Bikepack again (without the hypothermia this time)
Increase both speed and endurance
Do more gravel races (Dirty Kanza is on the calendar if I can get in)
Learn to remount my bike properly (cyclocross-style)
Buy a cross specific bike
Move up to a Cat 3 in cyclocross
Get more women involved in racing (MTB, gravel, & cross)

– Get fatter.2017:
– Snappier one-liners and comebacks for various vehicular miscreants.December 30, 2016 at 2:16 pm #1062322lordofthemark
Participanthmm, won’t match what some folks do , but here goes
2016.
Rode over 2700 miles (up from under 2200 in 2015) my most ever.
Rode 345 miles in one month, my most ever.
Commuted 3 times a week fairly regularly in the better weather.
Commuted at least once a week almost the entire year.
Rode over 100 miles in one day.
Rode the length of the W&OD, the CCT, the MBT. Explored many other areas.
Rode in a big organized ride (13 colonies) for the first time (would have finished but for a flat)
Doubled my Freezing Saddles miles, to over 500.
Rode somewhat faster (as evidenced by a bunch of PR’s)
Became a member of BPAC, and participated in advocacy in several ways.
Learned more about bike maintenance, including changing out a tube, fixing a flat, and then changing a tire.
Got a CaBi membership.2017
Increase my commuting, to the point where I am commuting most of the time by bike.
Ride more miles total – 3000 is probably not an ambitious enough goal, but its a nice round number.
Go faster – try to get my average speed for my commute into work over 13MPH.
Ride 100 miles with a bit more time to spare this time. Try riding over 25 miles without a rest stop.
Ride in a more challenging organized ride than 13 colonies.
Ride the length of the ART. Ride the southern half of the GCCCT. Ride the full length of RCP/Beach Road, after it reopens. Ride the C&O from Georgetown to Great Falls.
Do better in BAFS, especially points. Use CaBi to sleaze like mad.
Ride CaBi a lot more, get to know it better.
Learn more about bike maintenance.
Do more advocacy with BPAC.
Do not have anything stolen.
Buy a new bike, a more aggressive one than my Dew.
Get QOTM onto a bike again. Try to do a CaBi around the city day with her.Edit – Oh, and a big goal, not purely about biking, but mostly – get LDL cholesterol level down enough to get off statins entirely.

Don’t forget the accomplishment of coming out to coffee club and joining Strava, both of which are gateway drugs to Freezing Saddles.

.So awesome that your actions are being magnified. I grew up mostly in places where kids rode to school regularly, but I don’t see kids on bikes much here at all.
When do the kids get kicked out of the cargo bike nest?

I love all the family biking achievements even if they involve death marches and freezing cold. The best of my childhood all involves spending time with my dad.
How are the carbon wheels? Do I need some?

That log jump is pretty impressive. I hopped a curb this year.
. Did you measure the log or was it a guesstimate?
