Hi Everyone—one of the pieces of feedback that Arlington County received from the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) in how to improve our bicycle friendliness is to promote particular pieces of the trail infrastructure we have.

In particular, the LAB point out that the circular route connected together by the Custis Trail, Mt. Vernon Trail, Four Mile Run Connector and W&OD trail is a fantastic resource for area cyclists who use it for transportation or recreation. We are looking to substantially improve these trails with way-finding signage in the near future and other potential in-ground upgrades.

Since getting feedback from the LAB we have reprinted the bike map and have highlighted that section with an orange outline and referred to it as “The Arlington Loop” with the description, “(Premier off-street facilities supporting County-wide and regional transportation).” Going forward we’d like to consider an alternative name that is catchy and helps describe this loop as much more than just its use as a recreational trail.

Since many people here on the forum use the trails of this route regularly, we know that you probably have some good ideas for a name. It should be short, catchy and fun.

This route is something to be proud of and we would like it to be a distinctive and well known aspect of the County. Help us come up with a name that can do this!

    Thoughts?

I agree with everything you say, but what is wrong with “The Arlington Loop”?

The beltway-equivalent interstate in my hometown is called “The Loop” — gets the idea across about how it serves the regional transportation network. I think of the Arlington Loop as serving a similar function for non-motorized transit, no?

That’s what we came up with–we were hoping that others had some suggestions. But if people like the name, then we’re happy to continue using it…

What about something like the Green Loop, to differentiate it from that horrible thing that carries a bajillion cars around the city every day? Or less subtle, like the Smog Reduction Loop?

Howsabout “Loop d’Arlington” (which I think I first saw in an area cycling book)? When I was living in Alexandria, that was my usual fun excursion ride and I always felt a touch faster knowing that I was in a French-themed ride, a la Le Tour de France.

I like the old fashioned Arlington Loop or Arlington Green Loop.

    1. The Arlington Bikeway
    2. The Arlington Link
    3. The Arlington Fairway
    4. The Arlington Expressway

I like the Arlington Fairway. It’s optimistic, it is not bike-exclusive, it gives you a feeling of open road.

One vote here for the Arlington Loop — in honor of all the loopy people who are so very fond of it. Having lived along a golf course, fairway has a different meaning to me. Plus, I think it’s important to communicate that it is in fact a “loop” – which is one of the best things about it.

Arlington Loop. Change it and we will have problems.

I think Arlington Loop pretty much says it all. If we wanted to differentiate this from some other loop (such as the inner/outer loop of the beltway), we could formalize by saying Arlington Loop Trail or Arlington Loop Trail System (that would highlight the contribution of the FMR, W&OD, Custis and MVT)

    How about the “Most-of-this-used-to-be-part-of-DC-until-1846” loop?

    Or, The Arlington Bi-way.
It is a play on highway but because it moves people under their own power, whether it is their two feet or two wheels, it is differentiated from a road.

    Branding this is important.

If you go that route it should be “tri-way” or “three-way” since it combines three separate bike paths… So you call up your friends for a ride and say, “anyone up for a three way?”
