The Arlington Dodecahedron Trail – An extensive backstory can be created to explain why the “dodecahedron” name was used. It’s related to the pentagon shape, although it would be hard to explain why you can’t see twelve pentagons on the map. Would be great for confounding conspiracy theorists, especially those who think that Washington D.C.’s street grid design has mystical powers or a nefarious purpose.

    Perimeter Trail – Arlington (PERTRA)

National Capital area Independent Speedway (NCIS)

Arlington Leg-powered Integrated Express Network (ALIEN)

Arlington Bike Skater Pedestrian Orthogonal Perimeter (ABS-POP)

THE Trail in Arlington – Simple.

    North by Northwest

    South by Southwest

    The Arlington Car-Free Beltway

    The Arlington Car-Free Expressway

    The Arlington Bike-Walk Perimeter Trail

Or back to the Arlington Loop

Like THE Hotel in Las Vegas? I have good memories of playing craps there during my bachelor party . . .

Err, folks, I think the BikeArlington folks are looking for *serious* recommendations (though the common consensus appears to be to keep the Arlington Loop name).

As a member of the general public (not BA) I personally feel like the word “Loop” implies a recreational, fitness trail. Even though many people use it for this purpose, I think the main goal is to really make people aware that it is also widely used as a transportation corridor. Commuters aren’t going around the Loop to get to work, rather they’re using chunks of it.

The things is, it’s a loop. If you want to make the point that it’s a “transportation corridor,” then talk about the “parts.” People getting from point A to point B don’t use the entire loop, jsut like people don’t drive around the entire Beltway — they use parts of it. (Yes, I realize some people use the Arlington Loop to add extra miles, but those people already know about it and don’t care what it’s called.)

Instead of a loop, address each of the four trails as a major “bike transportation corridor” in Arlington and let people know (a) where it goes and (b) how to get to it. Don’t ignore that last part. A lot of people don’t know the easiest way to get onto one of these trails or the closest one yo where they live

If this is geared (<-see what I did there?) toward promoting commerce, I think you want something more destination oriented, no?
If this is geared toward recreation, I think ‘loop’ is more inviting.

I don know. There’s the Inner Loop. There’s the outer loop (they aint for recreation – they are for breeding psychosis). And then there is the Arlington Loop. Kinda a good rip.

Can we call it “The Beltway”? I kinda like the idea of the odd looks people will give me when I say I’m going for a spin around The Beltway at lunch. ;)

Don’t get me going on acronyms. “Fantastic Arlington Recreational Track” comes to mind.

My most sincere apologies for that last comment. I’ll do better next time.
