So while some runners have the headphones too loud, there are many others who appreciate the warning.
I notice more people acknowledge the warning on the Custis than on the W&OD/Mt Vernon. I have had people actually say “thank you” when I announce that I’m passing on the Custis, even while they’re running.

Saw these wild turkeys in Anacostia next to Anacostia Drive SE (which parallels the bike trail) Saturday evening. The male was doing the “I’m a stud” dance. The ladies were completely unimpressed.

Thanks again to Bike Arlington for the munchies.
Don’t thank us – Ann is the one to thank. I second everyone else’s comments. She did an amazing job putting such a fun event together!
Here are just a few photos from the beginning of the night.

Um… massive dock block???? Right????
We’ll have Alta providing enough bikes for us and making sure the stations are balanced. So fear not!

Would families on bike (who can’t take CaBi b/c child seats) be welcome in the group?
Yes – we would like the majority of riders to be on Capital Bikeshare but we understand that there are limitations especially for families with kids. We’re hoping to get about 90% CaBi, and if there are others who just want to join for the ride to the fair, that’s great too. It will add to the impressive mass of people riding bikes!
Thanks!

Might be worthwhile to provide some text that the hotels can include in their neighborhood awareness about biking and how to use CaBi. While most of the “how to” training would occur at the CaBi stations, you have to provide enough comfort to the visitor that they conclude that approaching the station would be worth their effort. A one pager that contains the CaBi concept and pricing overview, a summary of the trails (verbal and a small map), a listing of LBS for rentals and the websites where the riders can see a bigger map would fit nicely in those hotel amenities notebooks. They would need to be tailored for the location so we might see one for CC, one for Rosslyn and one for Ballston.
ACC’s thoughts on her experiences in Miami might be a touchstone. Is that information easily available in Arlington?
YES! Arlington Transportation Partners, provides consulting services to businesses, including hotels. Here’s a tidbit on what they do with hotels:
“We work with all Arlington hotels to make sure you have the transportation information you will need to help guests, including educating staff about all of the local transportation options, transportation brochures, and much more! We also have employee services that include the implementation of transit benefits, commuting information to make their daily commutes easier, and ongoing support in both areas to ensure all are knowledgeable about local commuting options.”
On top of that they also provide brochure services which provides hotels with pamphlets on metro, bus, and bike! They also have the option of purchasing a large information display which not only holds the brochures, but has a localized map with public transportation information on the map. The inclusion of bike facilities on the neighborhood map made it hard to follow (there were too many colors) so the map offers a localized view of the neighborhood and the bike map sitting in the brochure holder will fill in the gaps.

but what about shutting down Wilson/Clarendon or Columbia Pike? Glebe? Sounds like the kind of thing a LAB Gold community would do…
Shutting down Columbia Pike or Glebe road would be an excellent idea! Especially since they both are not bike friendly. Would love to see that happen…

I’ve posted your message to the DOT bike commuter list-serv crowd. Hopefully the WashCycle will pick this up as well.
Thanks so much! We’ve had more registrations already. We really appreciate it

Something else to keep in mind–it’s a multi-use trail so we need to be mindful of other users who might be on it as well and not just have it bicycle focused. Pedestrians, rollerbladers, cross country skiers, etc…
and horseback riders…
As a member of the general public (not BA) I personally feel like the word “Loop” implies a recreational, fitness trail. Even though many people use it for this purpose, I think the main goal is to really make people aware that it is also widely used as a transportation corridor. Commuters aren’t going around the Loop to get to work, rather they’re using chunks of it. I’m not very creative so my suggestions are limited, but I wanted to mention that maybe try not to focus on synonyms for Loop or words that imply that it’s a circular trail. It’s a transit network just like the metro is – although I don’t think people ride that for fun

Here’s a basic correlation between daily temperature and Bikeshare trips. What do you think?
You asked for daily temp/precipitation for 2011. I used to collect monthly weather data for my old job using NOAA NOWdata. You can select Daily data for a month from the National Airport (or any other location) and it provides “daily maximum, minimum and average temperature (degrees F), heating and cooling degree days (base 65), precipitation, snowfall and snow depth (inches) for all days of the current or previous month.” So it only gives you the current or previous month but: “Additional stations and months of data are available from the Regional Climate Centers and the National Climatic Data Center.”
Here’s the link to the NOW data: nowdata.rcc-acis.org/LWX/pubACIS_results
The observed weather tab offers some other queries. Play around with it, I’m sure you can find what you’re looking for…
