ParticipantThere was a cyclist who hit the curb and ended up landing hard on the trail yesterday afternoon. He got scraped up pretty badly and left some blood on the trail but claimed to be alright. Be careful out there.

ParticipantI have the CT-6.3 in my bag. It folds up to almost nothing and will work for almost any chain you throw at it. Solid tool, too.

ParticipantMy commute takes me on the MVT from the Tulane Drive entrance all the way to the 14th Street Bridge. There are no alternatives to Tulane-Alexandria to get to Alexandria City from the South that don’t involve going on roads unfriendly to bikes (Fort Hunt road by Belle Haven, and the unplowed path on the Fairfax County portion of Route 1 (Alexandria City plows their section). This has been my biggest obstacle to having an all-bike commute during snow emergencies.
Ideally, the trail would be plowed all the way to at least Alexandria Avenue to provide connectivity with the Sherwood Hall Lane bike lanes (part of my commute) and not require users to cross the parkway at Tulane. South of Alexandria Avenue, I can imagine it being very hard to plow with the switchbacks and West Boulevard provides a plowed alternative on-road.
So Tulane Drive and North I would consider essential to everyone South of Alexandria City, and Alexandria Avenue and North would be even better.

ParticipantRunning Schwalbe Marathon Winters right now, good combination of bite in the ice without as much of a hit in rolling resistance I’ve experienced in other studded tires (still slower than regular tires, naturally). Ended up riding in the peak of the blizzard today, was the fastest growing snow beard I have had while riding.

ParticipantBatteries produce their power through reversible chemical reactions. Going one way they release power, going the other way they take it in to recharge. Most of those reactions will slow significantly when you have very low temperatures. That’s why you car has trouble starting in the cold, it is also why phones and other electronics don’t work as well when it is particularly frigid. Below a certain point they’re unable to provide adequate current for the device. If you’re not looking at your phone while you’re riding, keeping it in your bag or in your pocket may help keep it functioning in low temperatures. If you’re already near your limit in terms of battery capacity, this lowering of efficiency could be your main issue as cold essentially reduces the effective capacity of your battery (while it is cold).
If you’ve got an LCD screen, you may notice it takes a while for the image to change. The reason is they liquid crystal material that moves to change the amount of light that gets passed through the pixel thickens and moves quite a bit slower when subjected to a charge, resulting in a ghosting effect and lag. AMOLED displays should not be impacted by this.

Excellent thinking–you’re probably right on that. And then why does the line fade out so much in the southern half?
This is PURE speculation, but it looks like the fade out is happening just south of “South Thimble Island” which is where the rest area and restaurant is, in fact there is a tiny hot spot on the island. Perhaps the people who were riding from the Delmarva stopped to use the facilities and realized they left Strava on and rectified the situation before continuing? I would imagine there would be more people riding the Delmarva than down in VA Beach/Norfolk. Who knows.

ParticipantI would guess that the majority of “highway riding” was people leaving Strava on after finishing a ride and then driving from the end-point, or using it to track car rides (not sure why you would want to do that). I’ve seen this from many users who get a KOM that is then quickly flagged.
As for going through the tunnel, Strava seems to connect the points between GPS reads. I’ve seen people with really odd straight-line tracks when their phones are not getting good GPS locks. The ride through the tunnel is probably Strava doing a straight-line connection between the last track before and the first track after the tunnel.

ParticipantHello teammates, I’m Ed C. and I live in the Fairfax County section of Alexandria. The majority of my miles come from my commute into DC, which tends to run 26-28 miles a day depending on the route I take. It was great meeting many of you last night and I look forward to riding with everyone both virtually and in person.

ParticipantI use a camelbak podium ice bottle. The insulation works both ways. Most of the time it remains liquid for an hour commute, although it does get quite cold.
