I have been really enjoying my REI shell that my wife found for me. It is super breathable and is relatively waterproof.
Which REI shell are you referring to?

ParticipantI need to clarify a point.
The bodysocks that are framed in a manner that keep the material off of the rider have been noted for it’s summer coolness (see belowe).

The ones that are in close contact with the rider (see below) have been noted as being rather deficient in air circulation on warmer days (some riders stop using this kind above 75F).
So pfunkallstar was onto something…

ParticipantWhat are some of the best reasonably priced top shells that you’ve found?
What worked and what didn’t?
I picked up an IllumiNITE shell because it say it was ‘breathable’, also well as highly viz and reflective. It is not breathable, thought there is a minor vent on the back and I ride a recumbent, which predominantly negates the vent. Regardless, my wonderfully wicking underlayers bring the moisture right up to the jacket layer, where it stops cold and accumulates. So I’ve been wearing a crewneck top layer and saving the jacket as raingear.

ParticipantFYI, one of the major reason people use these bodysocks is to significantly reduce aerodynamic drag.
The simulator linked below can calculate the difference between various cycle configurations. The Easy Racer without any fairings is listed near the bottom of the CdA values table. The Gold Rush near the top of that table is roughly the same as the Easy Racer, though with a bodysock – you can see the large aerodynamic gain the bodysock imparts;

Can’t imagine what it is like in there in the summer though – Holy Sweaty Pants Batman!
I’ve thought the same thing, though when I’ve mentioned that to those who ride with these year around, they claim they are cooler with these in the summer, as it keeps the sun off of them, and there is still more than sufficient air circulation.

Did you mean to say it was me you passed on Thursday? If so, I apologize if I didn’t say anything. I must have been really engrossed in my commute. I did pass that way on Thursday a.m. (but not Friday).
No need to apologize, I was passing on a corner and was going about 4-5 mph faster. I might have said something if it hadn’t been for the 2 cyclists coming up the hill that I had to think about positioning myself to avoid, so by the time I could chat, I was at least 20 feet past.

ParticipantI thought I passed you on the way in, I was on the recumbent that went by at the top of the slight hill at Van Buren st before getting on the trail that bypassess East Falls Church Metro under Sycamore St. Come to think of it, that might have been Thursday.

After 3 year of nice emails to HR, they have finally agreed to do implement the bike benefit program in my office. Great news on a great bike commuting day!
A great example of what persistence can do – kudos!
Is there anyone else who would like to see something similar at their office?

ParticipantI urge you to support an amendment by Representatives Petri (R-WI) and Johnson (R-IL) that restores dedicated funding for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School.
With our excessive dependence on foreign oil, any measures we can take to further enable cycling as transportation will help reduce “America’s addiction to oil” as President Bush had stated in his 2006 SOTUS.

No, you need to find a masseuse who will ride tandem with you and strap the beer and a straw to your helmet.
This would work as well as my attempts to photograph myself when airborne in my flying monkey costume last Halloween…

Just keep spinning.
And start breathing more deeply as you ramp up your energy level approaching the hill. Believe the hill is 10% higher than it really is, then you are at the top before you know it…

ParticipantGreat way to create a bold shift in your lifestyle – kudos!
Have you noticed any difference in your physical fitness? How about outlook/attitude?
