This morning when I arrived at work, I was greeted in the lobby by one of the bldg manager folks, who informed me that henceforth, I would not be able to take my bike in through the lobby because they had put a bike rack in the garage (which previously had none).
I never understood this. Are they afraid you’re going to dirty their floors?

The bun happynicky shows is too high for what I’m talking about. The way I do it is basically to start with a loose low ponytail, then put your helmet on (pulling the ponytail through the hole between the helmet and adjustable strap in the back – not all helmets will allow this), then roll the ponytail up with another hair elastic into a bun. If I do the bun first then try to get the helmet on, my rolled up hair won’t fit through the hole.
Petzl makes a rock climbing helmet specifically designed for ponytails (the helmet is supposed to be for women, but if you’re a dude with a ponytail it’s just as functional). If there’s a market for it in climbing I imagine there’s a market for it in cycling, which seems (by my crude observations) to have many more female participants.

MVT on Saturday is craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy!
This. A thousand times this. Sunday as well, especially when you’re used to the 6am MVT commute.

ParticipantTwo crazy passes this afternoon on the MVT. First, Mr. No-Helmet-No-Call) passes me on the right as I’m completing my own pass and starting to merge back to the right. He ends up going off-road to complete his maneuver.
Second, I slow down for a couple + small child as a large Bike & Roll group passes in the opposite direction. Elite cyclist calls “left” and blows through the very narrow gap between the group and the family.
Nice day, otherwise, though.

I hope to find ways to tweak the route (I think devoting some time to exploring around the Mason bridge approaches on either side would help) the and my handling of it (as well as get in better shape, and get a more suitable bike).
One of the unexpected novelties of bike commuting is that as you get into better shape, your commute gets shorter… at least until you start looking for ways to add mileage.

Lots of people out running this morning. Don’t they have jobs? GO TO WORK, YOU LAZY RUNNERS!
I was also surprised to see as many runners as I did at 6am. And yes, most were running ninja-style. I imagine with the cooler weather there will be a lot more runners on the trail.

Does google have me riding on the walkways through the Mall and is that copacetic?.
The walkways on the Mall are OK in the mornings. In the afternoon there’s more tourist-dodging, especially on the walkways around the Washington Monument, but it should be getting better as the days shorten…

At this point I am all about making the ride shorter!
I was the same way when I first started bike commuting. Nowadays I’ll throw in a Haines Point loop (or two) every now and then just for laughs.
Personally, I’d ride an extra 1/4 to 1/2 mile to avoid hauling my bike up/down stairs. I think you’d end up sweatier doing that than just riding around the block.

The green bike lanes are nice, but they’re so short that you don’t get that “Wow, I’m in a really special place!” kind of feeling that I got when using the green bike lanes in San Francisco. That said, they are very nice to have, and I’d like to see this in more areas around the county.
I got the same feeling when I saw them. They’re very short. Still, though, I’m sure they’ll improve safety at those intersections for bicyclists. Just can’t help but wish that the green continued the entire length of the lane

Thanks for posting. Where do you get on 15th Street, and are you riding to the east of the Jefferson Memorial and taking the sidewalk along Maine?
Coming off the 14th St bridge, I take the sidewalk in front of the Jefferson Memorial (alongside Ohio Dr), traveling east and then eventually north as the road curves. If you then bear right and then cross at the light, you’ll be on 15th St, which will take you north to Independence.
Sorry if my description is less than awesome. It might help to look at my last Strava record: http://app.strava.com/rides/20140119

ParticipantI commute to L’Enfant (from Pentagon City) and usually take 15th to Independence, then a right on L’Enfant Promenade to my office (at the glass pyramid). 12th St. is the turn right before the promenade. Independence certainly has some traffic, but it’s a short distance and drivers don’t seem to mind (more than usual anyway).

That’s interesting. I recently noticed that the restricted lanes on I-66 outside the beltway (the red ‘X’ lanes) had been painted red.
