ParticipantThe several times that I’ve broken a chain – it has never been at the quick link, always a regular link. In fact – my Xtracycle currently has three quick links on it (the chain *is* due for replacing at this point) and that chain sees a tremendous amount of stress.

And cars.
Seriously – when Herndon installed streetlights on the W&OD this winter, I encountered two oncoming cars between 6-7pm, just west of town center. High-beams, of course, so finding the edge of the trail (to GTFO) was challenging. In the winter, at night, west of Reston, yeah – can be pretty sparse. I suspect that I was the first trail user they encountered.
Probably less of a problem @ 2AM, summertime.

Check into one way rentals for both cars and moving vans. DC being a bigger draw than Pittsburgh, the rates are probably comparatively reasonable.

Planning a pgh->DC ride in july and just realized I might have a problem with the dummy due to the 50lb/70″ limit. I think that means normally my cargo bike won’t be allowed. Also: “Recumbent, tandem and special bicycles over the standard bicycle dimensions and will not fit in a standard bicycle box are prohibited.”
I wonder if I remove the front wheel & fork/steerer and strip it of enough accessories it’s under 50lbs before packing it if it’ll fit and be accepted?

I’m in the exact situ – ‘cept “Xtracycle” and “August”. We found that the Uhaul one-way rental of their cheapest/smallest boxtruck was the same price as a pair of Amtrak tickets and would get us there on OUR schedule and cut the transit time in half – effectively giving us another full day of riding. (Not to mention no need for hotel, etc., in PGH b/c the train gets in @ midnight….)

ParticipantAnother option is the Burley Piccolo – attaches to an included rear rack (moose rack). Eliminates the seatpost issues, guarantees rack clearance, allows for panniers to carry all kid-stuffs.
