Rode it this morning, east bound. There were quite a few pedestrians on it, though in fact riding (at a moderate pace) was not worse than plenty of our more popular trails, and much better than some sidewalks I occasionally find myself bailing to.
Other than a “bikes follow ped signals” sign, there was no signage whatsoever indicating this is a bike lane. Nor is there a center stripe as two way PBLs usually have. Given that, its hard to blame the pedestrians for using it as an extra sidewalk, especially as there are not many riders (I saw none other than myself). The actual sidewalk did not appear THAT narrow, but I did not walk it.
When I rode southeastward coming back from Haines Point about an hour ago, it was similar and the real sidewalk was blocked by a band waiting to play and other things.
I still haven’t seen the bikeometer.

ParticipantWhen I rode at 11 AM on Van Buren on the portion of the W&OD which is not really the W&OD the bridge was closed to cars and some workers were milling about. There was no problem getting through on a bike since one could easily go around the barriers and none of the workers were paying attention. .

ParticipantMaine Avenue has been paved.
It still needs some line painting.
I rode a bit on the new bike lane. I had to dodge pedestrians on the way to the fish market. The actual sidewalk wasn’t useable there so I will give them a pass on that today. Hopefully the intended purpose of the bike lane will be made clear.

ParticipantThanks to both you. I did read that thread but exactly what was going on never clicked.

ParticipantNice picture, TwoWheelsDC. When riding through this mess, I never have time to actually look at what is happening. Does anyone know why the grass has been removed on the slope to Banneker Circle?
Only a few more days until the problems here become of a different variety.

I am guessing it will mean a fair number of people trying out the PBL, even though its not “open”. BTW, does that mean the construction will be done?
The grand opening of Phase I is on 10/12. So they expect it to be done.
I haven’t really looked at the PBL since I have enough trouble dodging uneven pavement, construction workers, and whatever without having my eyes wander to the bike lane. Does it look like it is useable now?

ParticipantTo add to the fun, there is a sign up today that Maine Avenue will be repaved from 10/3 to 10/11. Not sure how this will affect travel while it is going on.

I suppose I’m still miffed about the flat tire I got the other day which I suspect was from running over some debris on my way in. That and I’m staring out the window at a perfectly beautiful day and I’m itchin’ to get back out there.
Since the construction started, I have blamed 3 bike flats and one car flat on the construction. I am looking enviously at the bike track and thinking how good it will be until the middle of next year when Phase 2 construction begins. That will be even worse for me because it is nearer to where I live.

ParticipantI often ride on the GBT from the CCT to the point where it intersects Jones Mill Road and then follow Jones Mill northward to Beach Drive going west and eventually north again on Beach Drive. This is usually on weekends. What detour would anyone recommend. Conceivably it could be shorter. I don’t want to ride Connecticut or Rockville Pike.

ParticipantWill the trails be open the entire time?

The most eye-opening intersection for me to drive through was the W&OD and Shreve Road out in Falls Church. I biked through intersection a hundred times and had never driven it until like maybe 18 months ago. If you’re driving west, the trail crossing really sneaks up on you and there’s kind of a lot going on for drivers right there. So after driving it, I’m much more conscientious about how I approach that intersection on a bike.
The sight lines for bikes aren’t good either. They changed the “angle of attack” for bikes a few years ago, but IMHO that didn’t improve it significantly. I regard it as the most dangerous intersection on the entire W&OD which does not have a traffic light. I wonder how expensive it would be to build a bike bridge there.

ParticipantI have ridden past that urn hundreds if not thousands of times and never stopped to look at it closely.
