ParticipantWith them going out of business, I stopped by today and picked up a Garmin Edge 25 for 90 dollars. There was only one left as of 6 pm tonight. It normally goes for 170 everywhere else I’d looked.

ParticipantThis afternoon I headed up this way again, where the trail gets rough about 4.5 miles from Benning Ave, they put the water filled jersey barriers across the trail. I guess you could lift your bike over the barriers, I guess.

However, there were still barriers up pass the garbage incinerator plant. This photo is from under Benning Road.
On Thursday afternoon someone moved the one barrier sign. I have no idea who… the last two evenings the contractors have been planting trees and bushes along the way just South of New York Ave., but had their trucks pulled to the side so I didn’t have any problems. Thursday there was a fence across the trail just North of New York Ave. Today it was open and although the road was pretty rough, i was able to proceed all the way to riverdale park (it was just time to turn around).
I am really going to love this run when it is all done.

Capitol Hill or the Navy Yard/Ballpark area. Should be right at your rent limit, but the combination of walkability, bikeability, metro access, central location, and an endless supply of restaurants and things to do is nearly impossible to beat.
We live in the SE in the Capitol Hill not far from the Blue/Orange/Yellow metro line and so close to work that I have to range far and wide to get my miles in. Having 8th street for food is awesome, and the Miracle theater on weekends.

ParticipantI liked the question that got me to thinking that being able to make appointments online would be pretty cool. I’ve never heard of it though.

Is someone passing this info on to the people who need to know? (ie. Dave Patton).
I’d be happy to, but I don’t know Mr. Patton or anyone else that might want to know.
If you have a contact, let me know and I’ll be happy to pass it along.

ParticipantAnother one that seems to have gone missing is on the Washington side of the Anacosta riverwalk just to the East of the Sousa bridge. Just before you go over the bridge for going over the rails.

I finished the video for the route. It can be seen here: https://youtu.be/3S6Zztgjx0k
Nice job. I enjoyed seeing most of my commute.
As you pointed out the barricades are now gone. But the next time something special happens they will have them up again. Also a word of warning, the sidewalk from the Benning street bridge to the Anacosta Riverwalk turnoff is pretty broken up because of the trees on either sides.

I have Tifosi glasses (either the Fototec or one of their very similar models). They have lenses that change from clear to dark gray depending on how much ambient light there is.
I love them. Super light weight and I’ve never had a problem with them not changing quickly enough. The lenses can be purchased separately which is nice because I always manage to inflict a bad scratch once a year.
Is the light or UV that turns them dark?
I have a pair of Oakleys transitions that darkened by UV so they are great while riding but in the car they won’t darken cause of the UV blockers in the glass.

I did not read this until after my ride, but I agree (thanks for the heads up, though). On Saturday when I passed through there (multiple times to get alternative routes), I saw that it was completely covered in gravel, so I can confirm this. I adjusted my route for the video to go from Dix St onto Anacostia Ave. I had to maneuver around some barricades that were set up for a night run event at RFK, but I was determined to get the proper route. There will probably be a fade as the viewer “phases through” the barricades.
What sucked was that I come down the MUT by parking lot 8 to the river walk and then head west early in the morning and they still had most of the barricades up still. Made the ride dangerous. I look forward to seeing the video, i want to share it with friends when I talk about my commute.

Great timing, as I’m actually going to be filming for the second surge (Eastern Market to Minnesota Ave/Benning Rd) tomorrow so it’s fresh in my mind! I have 2 main options that you can take. I’m not sure where on Independence Ave you work, but this should help in at least getting you across the Anacostia River.
Both routes start the same:
- Head south on Minnesota Ave
- At the intersection of Minnesota Ave/Benning Rd, there’s a sidewalk on the south (far) side of Benning Rd that you can use to safely cross the bridge over the Anacostia Freeway
- The route shows up weird on Google Maps, but after crossing the bridge, use the crosswalk then turn left to head south on 36th St NE
- Turn right onto Dix St NE
- At the end of Dix St NE, you have 2 options to choose from:
I hope this helps. I plan to film everything tomorrow and will have the video up sometime next week so you and others will have something more visual to reference.
I would recommend, that if you are going to go over the Benning street bridge, stay on D street as the trail in the park is really rough and right at the bridge there is a lot of construction for the expansion of the trail. I really like this route, I go west to East during the week. It is a great ride. If you go past RFK via parking lot 8 (South side) there are porta-potties, just in case.

Considering adding the ability to switch on additional amenities on the map. Anyone have thoughts on what would be most useful? fun?
Thoughts I’ve had include:
– public restrooms
– water fountains (especially ones designed for filling a water bottle)
– bike shops
– bike fix-it stations
– beer
– little free librariesWould people be willing to help crowdsource the data?
– public restrooms!!!!!!!!!!
