Based on what I experienced this morning, the trail on the 14th Street bridge is also still largely covered in rutted ice. I don’t think I’d have fared very well without studs.
Thanks for the update. I’ll feel like a slacker for not arriving by bike at the HH, but I think that doing a 16mi roundtrip ride on icy paths w/o studded tires sounds like a bad idea. Pre-HH sleaze ride it is!
To my peeps planning a convoy from the Jefferson Memorial – ride safe and I look forward to meeting you at HH!

I know the route and happy to help marshall the convoy from Jeff Memorial
Thanks for the offer to lead! I’m going to keep an eye out for a report on what the trail conditions look like. I ride a commuter bike that doesn’t have super knobby tires. I can handle a little ice, but if it’s too bad I might leave my bike at the office and use public transit to get there.

Holy moly it was cold on my ride home tonight. Holy moly.
I am not certain I like this FS concept… :p
It felt REAL cold to me too! Although I was dumb and decided to make my short 3mi commute in my work clothes and shoes instead of changing into something warmer. Lesson learned!

ParticipantGreat idea for a challenge.
1/1/2015 – 5’4″ 154lbs 26.4BMIAfter achieving slow and steady weight loss for the past few years, I managed to go up about 9 pounds from the goal weight I finally reached this summer. So I have some work to do this winter!

My point is that some of us enjoy this biking forum as a way to get away from political discussions and comments about peoples’ professions.
Also, it might be helpful if we can try to keep things on their relevant threads.
In that regard, does anyone want to offer to lead a convoy from DC to Shirlington for the happy hour?
On another topic, it’s a beautiful day. WSGFABR! (We should go for a bike ride!)
I’ll be biking to the happy hour from 17th street near the White House if anyone wants to ride with me! I’ll be on my heavy commuter bike that day so it won’t be too zippy of a pace. I’d also be happy to glom onto a larger convoy since I’ve never actually biked to Shirlington before.

ParticipantI’m also happy to volunteer for something, although as a newbie I don’t have a good feel for what would be useful, so feel free to volunteer me for something. I do own a can of gold spray paint that could be used to make all sorts of different “trophies” for pointless awards.

ParticipantHi everyone! I’m new to the forum and to freezing saddles. I’ve been a road cyclist for most of my life (thanks to my dad who is a roadie!) and I more recently got into doing tris and cx. I haven’t ever been much of a winter biker, though! Now that I live in woodley park, I have an easy bike commute to k street, but I’m hoping this challenge will motivate me to do some longer winter rides. I’m also looking forward to meeting more cyclists and hopefully I’ll come out of the challenge with some new biking buddies!

ParticipantI’ll be at the happy hour too (my first). It will be a pretty decent ride back to my place in Woodley Park afterwards, but on the plus side, I will rack up some additional miles for my Freezing Saddles team!

ParticipantHi everyone! I’m a newbie to this forum (lurking for a little while), but the awesomeness of freezing saddles motivated me to join you all. Thanks to the ladies of the Women & Bicycles Facebook page for tipping me off to your forum and freezing saddles.
I’m more of a warm weather cyclist when it comes to longer rides, but I do a short commute by bike (woodley park to near the White House) pretty much every day. So I’ll be good about frequent riding, but I’m also hoping this challenge motivates me to get in some longer rides this winter (not on my trainer!). I’m going to be signing up for the challenge today. I’m looking forward to meeting some of you and participating in the forum!
