ParticipantI’ve done a number of computrainer classes at the Spokes in Alexandria and when I was upgrading my wheelset I had a pretty lengthy chat with Bill there. He is very knowledgeable and I think any class he teaches would be great.
I ended up going with a deep rim aerowheel so he didn’t build mine for me, but if I ever wanted to get a custom light weight wheel for climbing I’d definitely go to him.
If you do take one of his classes make sure to report back!!

ParticipantBikeArlington has reflective arm/leg band giveaways that we could probably hook you up with if you were so inclined…

ParticipantAnd here’s the latest update I’ve gotten from the Trails Manager, “The detour signs are in place for the Westover Underpass. Our ranger unit will move traffic barrels and additional signage into place around 8:30 pm when the detour is in effect. Our trail crew will remove the blockades in the morning around 7 am.”

Actually, I think the work is planned for further west on the trail (the underpass beneath 66, not far from the where the Custis meets the W&OD). Probably can use the same detour that was set up a few years ago when that section was closed before.
The I-66 spot improvements are going on all the way from Ballston to past Sycamore St–the original posting is correct.
See here for a map.

ParticipantYes, Womble is correct–the green signs you are seeing are merely to designate a “recommended” road for bikes to use. (low traffic, wide lanes, etc…)
If you are looking for turn-by-turn directions, you should look at the Garmin Edge 705 which can do navigation like that and has a bunch of other options too. It’s a little pricey though!

ParticipantHi Larry, thanks for your comments. I think I can answer some of your questions.
The Capital Bikeshare program is replacing the Smartbike system. Capital Bikeshare contacted all current members of the Smartbike system through email yesterday giving them the option to opt into Capital Bikeshare with a free memberships that last through March.
Yes, you are correct. The normal annual membership price is $75, but for kickoff will only be $50. That’s significantly cheaper than other North American bikeshare systems (Minneapolis, Denver, Montreal…)
And lastly, a bikesharing system works best when stations can be clustered together. The Crystal City area is the initial focus of the system because of a fantastic public-private partnership through the generosity of the Crystal City BID. Expect to see the system quickly expanded to other parts of Arlington with a focus on the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

ParticipantWith the partnership between Arlington and DC on the Capital Bikeshare system, who knows what could happen with future collaborative efforts!?!

ParticipantArlingtonride – thanks for the kind words on the Arlington Map. We’re pretty happy with it’s durability too.
We will be working on a new redesign at some point in the future and wanted to solicit thoughts on map? Particularly on it’s size, it’s not actually a “standard” brochure size–it’s slightly smaller. Do you think that a slighty larger size would be better? Or is it fine how it is now?
Anyone else have comments?
Here’s a link to the download the map in case you don’t have it in front of you.

ParticipantThanks Mark–in the next couple of days and weeks, BikeArlington and the County’s Communications team is going to be getting the story on sharrows out to the public through it’s various sources (Citizen, Insider, Social Media, etc…)

ParticipantI was thinking the other week that it would be fun to do the Conte’s ride on a Trek Pure!

ParticipantIt’s trail out to Tysons, and once you hit Gallows road, there is a nice wide asphalt sidewalk/path that goes North. You can also hop the curb where Kidwell Dr. dead ends along Gallows near the entrance to the SAIC compound and once you go over Rt 7, you can get on the Mall ring road.
There is bike parking near Parking Terrace C by the Guard Shack at the entrance to the Red Loading dock between Nordstrom and the California Pizza Kitchen/Panera entrance.
(Can you tell I’ve made that trip once or twice?)

ParticipantBallston Mall has some parking near Macy’s along Wilson, and it much more convenient (and cheaper!) than car parking there. Pentagon City has some decent retail, but isn’t that close to the rest of the county…unless you happen to be spending a lot of time in Crystal City.
Tysons Corner Center, one of the largest shopping centers on the east coast, is actually surprisingly accessible with a little route planning, and isn’t as far as you might think…

ParticipantI’d suggest Java Shack and Northside Social as two coffee shops that have great policies towards bikes. Java Shack sponsors a few local riding groups and Northside Social has lots of space for bike parking!
Rosslyn has a farmers market on Thursday afternoons during the summer right in front of the BikeArlington offices on Oak St, Clarendon has one at the Metro on Wednesday afternoons, and the Courthouse market runs on the weekends!
