Congratulations on your wedding and on knowing what appropriate footwear is for such a dignified occasion.

Since the bride vetoed the tuxedo bike jersey, cool socks was the next best thing.

I’ve been waiting for appropriate socks to bust out my entry to this pointless prize. I present: Spacedog!

When I see Triskaidekaphiliacs I squint and read it as Parlaiment Funkadelic

Team 13: Playin’ Dertien is clever. I like it.

    Or how about Triskaidekaphobiacs?

I go by Ted. I currently am living in Del Rey, Alexandria. My commute takes me right up though DC to Takoma Park. Suffice to say, evening HH plans much further out in Virginia than the beltway are not likely to be within my range. My wife and I currently have a house under contract, so that is taking priority with my outside of work time. With enough planning ahead, I might be able to join for weekend rides. I’ve also got a ride or two in mind in the Bellhaven area in mind that I’d be up for hosting.

The word Thirteen in Finnish is kolmetoista. In Dutch it’s dertien. And in Danish, thirteen is tretten.

These could be other team name options.

Or, how about the Cyclodelic Triskaidekaphiliacs? Just a though that works in some cycling connections.

Another direction could be di13 playing off the Shimano di2 brand.

I woke up with it on my mind, so I had to post it.

    Just… No.

Anything that thins your blood (alcohol, aspirin, prescription blood thinners, etc) will actually LOWER your body temperature. If you are not medically required to thin your blood, it is definitely not something that you want to do in the cold. Hypothermia is not fun.

As for the OP’s original question: A pair of good quality mountain bike style platform pedals (with replaceable metal pins) and a nice pair of insulated winter boots (I use a pair of Keens with 400g of Keen. Warm insulation) have kept my feet relatively warm throughout the past three winters that I have commuted full time. I have even done several rather long rides (50+ miles) with them and had no problem with my feet not being connected to the pedals.

One thing that a lot of people forget about with regards to clipless shoes in the winter is that both the cleat and the pedal act as a heat sink drawing heat away from your foot. If you insist on clipping in (and there is nothing wrong with that), then you will either need to get a pair of winter cycling shoes (I do have a pair of Giro Alpineduro’s that are nice when it is above 20F) or find a way to insulate your foot better from the heat sink. I have heard about people using a layer of foil underneath a thick wool insole. Not sure how effective that is, but it might be worth a try.

I do use a thermal insole which has a layer of foil/reflectix on the bottom, topped with wool. The bottom of the feet don’t seem to be an issue.

I payed closer attention this morning, and found it seems to be the tops of my feet and my toes. So I think if I find a way to better insulate the tops of my feet, I’ll notice an improvement.

What kind of distance/time are we talking about here?

My commute is 14 miles each direction, right around an hour.

I’ll try to incorporate some of these suggestions. I’ve tried a few of them before, but maybe I was doing them wrong.

I don’t like the idea of not clipping in over that distance, I like being connected to the bike. My feet sliding around on the pedals for that distance seams uncomfortable to me.

The rest of my body stays warm with my other gear. It’s just my toes that suffer.

As “food for thought” – here’s a quick example of a “tiered” system of diminishing returns for the number of miles ridden in a given day, separate from the bonus points idea. This is setup so that after every 10 mile increment, the value of the next incremental mile is reduced by, for example, 10%. In other words, 1 point per mile up to 10, 0.9 points per mile for anything between 10 and 20, 0.81 points per mile for anything between 20 and 30, etc. The Excel formula to calculate that is: 10*((1-0.9^ROUNDDOWN(MILES/10,0))/(1-0.9))+MOD(MILES,10)*(0.9^ROUNDDOWN(MILES/10,0)) That decreases a little bit faster than the previous example, with the 101st mile being worth 0.35 points. You can make it diminish faster or slower easily enough by changing the 0.9 figure either lower or higher. The table below shows what happens every 10 miles for 0.95, 0.9, 0.8, and 0.7.

One could mix and match so that you have a similar tiered idea, but with accelerating discounts (i.e., maybe you start with a 0.9 factor but make it 0.8 after 40 miles and 0.7 after 80 miles or whatever). Again – it all depends on what you want the results to look like.

For the “average” participant, I do like the idea of this tiered system to keep points closer between long distance riders, and around the block riders.

That day was amazing fun! I spent a while going up and down a tiny hill in my old neigborhood, falling over and over, and a woman came out and asked “Are you just learning to ride a bike?”

all i hope is that an awesome snow day like that doesn’t come up at the end of january, since i’ll be on a cruise for a couple days. apparently they don’t let you bring bikes on cruises.

No laps around the deck on a folding bike that you happen to pack in your bag?

2017 BAFS was my first. It got me started towards a new annual distance goal of 5000 miles. I’m less than 300 miles away, and if I can reach that milestone, it will shatter my previous annual mileage record.

I’m excited to get my 2018 started with another round of BAFS. I wasn’t too involved in the social side of the “competition” last year, and I’m looking to change that this year.
