I know this was probably meant in jest, but please don’t do that. One of the reasons that we can get excellent service at places like Revolution and Conte’s (and comparatively blank stares at places like Performance and REI) is that Revolution and Conte’s pay for knowledgeable staff. When folks take that for free, and then go spend at a place that doesn’t provide it, it just not cool.
Only sort of joking. I wouldn’t pull that on Revolution. As for Contes, I wish someone would buy the building and turn it into s Waffle House.
I tried a 54 road bike today and was told it was a good torso fit. A employee also confirmed dropping a size for the CC.
Alas, none are in stock so I have to wait.

ParticipantI think I might bike on up to Contes and let them think I’m interested in an 8k bike. I guess they will measure me.
REI told me I can order 2 sizes and they will sell the other on the floor. Bonus, I get 10% off for my dividend!

Because of the higher bottom bracket relative to road bikes, the sizing on Cross Checks runs a little different than your average road bike. For example, I ride a 54cm road bike and a 52cm Cross Check (I’m 5’9″ and 31 inseam). You need to size the bike by the top tube length, not just the height of the top tube when standing over it. Have the LBS put the bikes on a trainer and spend some time working out a quick position on both, then take them both for a ride. If they balk at the idea, go elsewhere. The “don’t touch my junk” test isn’t nearly enough to properly fit a bike.
When in doubt go for the smaller size – you can always change the stem length and saddle height but there’s only so much you can do for a frame that’s too big for you.
I’m 5’8 with a 29 inseam (need to remeasure that again). So i probably should try a 52 as well?

It’s a touch on the high side. Online pricing runs $1000 to $1100 and if you shop right you pay no tax and get free shipping. You just have to be prepared to dial the bike in when you get it or pay a shop to do it which may negate any savings.
Spokes isn’t a bad shop, one in Vienna is especially good in my experience.
I called REI and they said they can order it for me and I get the 10% dividend as well. I’ll see if Spokes is willing to match.

Participantthanks form the spokes tip. 1150 is the price. Does that sound about right? I’m wary of some of the bike shops around here.

ParticipantAnyone know of a local dealer? I’m sick of this hybrid

ParticipantI doubt that hills have any basis for right-of-way, but even if it DID, the yield sign trumps that right of way.

ParticipantI wanted to avoid looking like looking like a d-bag wearing all of those fancy clothes, but after getting some unpleasant chafing I caved and got some padded Lycra shorts. Well worth it. They also make padded Lycra underwear which you can use under street clothes.
I also find those biker shirts with the back pockets very handy for carrying stuff like your phone and wallet. Fortunately I found one in white without all that goofy advertising crap that people wear.

Here’s me telling the truth. I stop now if the cars have the right of way, but continue on through the “don’t walk” sign if there are no cars.
I will do the same thing with a red light.
I advise you not to do that on the Oak St. crossing. Almost all the drivers who use that light know this is a short green and they will speed up to make the light. And here’s the rub — you can’t see the cars until the last instant. This is compounded by the fact there is a “no turn on red” sign there, which was installed by the county because cyclists coming down the hill always blow the stop sign. Yes, there are stop signs on both sides of oak streets for cyclists. I’ve never seen anyone every stop for one in 10 years, unless a car was coming.

ParticipantOne great thing about biking is the transportation factor. Get a nice comfy hybrid and install a rack on the back and some bungee cord. I do almost all my grocery shopping with my bike. You can carry a lot, but not THAT much, so you will have the added benefit of having to be selective in your shopping.

ParticipantSorry to hear that I suggest you get your phone and “snap” a picture of their car, and then try and get one of the driver.
And you don’t really need to take a picture, just make them THINK you are taking a picture. They will think twice about pulling that crap again in the future. I’ve done this trick before with just PRETENDING I had a camera and it made the driver turn their head away.
Be careful doing this, you don’t want to get them so pissed at you that they try to run you over. However if you do want to make them mad, shake your phone at them like you are saying “Can’t you see I’m trying to have a private conversation!!!!”
