ParticipantCongrats.
That should tell you how far you have developed as a cyclist if you look at 25 miles as not that much more.
Are you planning on a recovery ride tomorrow? (unless the happened a while ago and I’m just last to the party) That would have
I personally can’t wait till my next ride. So far looks like it will be bikems 2011 but that seems like a really long time away. I’ve got a bad itch.
Were you riding your commuter?
If so did you make any pre ride mods?
If not would you next time?Kudos to you sir for completing your goals.

ParticipantGood for you, now it looks like you live the lifestyle.
They might start to bother you when the stubble sets in, but that only lasts a day or two. I typically use some man body lotion, but I tend to have dry skin so that really helps with any irritation I have.
Did the mrs approve of the androgenic hair removal?
SteveTheTech
ParticipantThat would be an ideal way to get started, and to gauge the interest of metro riders in getting themselves there.
Personally I’d do it if I were so dressed, or I had gone there with the intention of riding a bike. If you could get the support or wmata to maybe retweet your intentions or get wtop to add that to the traffic reports and new stories.
I bet organizing and funding this type of experiment would be much easier when it could be planned. Securing a roll back or large Ryder van for transport would be much easier with some advanced notice.

Participant+1 for straight shavers. (or otherwise inclined)
I’m Portuguese so I grow invasive leg hair and have been shaving it a few times a year just to keep on top of it, since just after high school.I like some of the advice in there that highlights easier cleanup of roadrash. (I can say that part is no joke)
As for doing it the night before a ride, there is a section in there that talks about millions of micro cuts, that your body has to dedicate energy to repairing. You do not need that on your ride.
I think it seems like wicking fabric works better on bare skin.I’ll say it…it feels great. I work in an auto shop…yeah my coworkers have said a few things about it when they see it the first time I wear shorts.
When you do it take your time and use an electric razor first and a new blade (and maybe your wifes’ razor if it’s got a wider handle). If you cut your shin or calf you will bleed like a stuck pig, lol looks like a crime scene.SteveTheTech
ParticipantHey thanks for asking,
She’s healing slowly, the patches kept her from scaring but she’s still pretty sore and has a few bone bruises (shoulder and hip)that seem to be lingering. Her bike is fine…although she has yet to ride it outdoors, but has been consistently using the trainer for exercise during the week. Honestly though we’ve been far too busy (for my taste at least) on the weekends to get back out there, and when we are free it’s been raining. I’m trying to get her into the idea of a small informal organized ride in October so she doesn’t end up getting scared off the hobby.

ParticipantSeems like a great idea.
I would imagine implementation would require some serious investment, and the increased bicycle traffic on a really bad day might make the situation a bit worse.
Although I really think any of the logistical concerns could be worked out, and if that were to take off anywhere DC would be the ideal location. Although it would be a shame for the mobile delivery unit to be stuck in traffic.

ParticipantI’ve already updated the levers earlier, started out a 9 and it’ll stay that way. It’s already a triple, she doesn’t need a 30 speed 27 should suffice….if not I get to buy more stuff.
Nah if that doesn’t work I’ll make some sort of high torque E bike monster, now that is a project I would enjoy researching and building(not riding, lol). bwahahaSteveTheTech

Nice DoF and bokeh!
Most of the decent replacements I’ve had my eye on have a very small wear indicator built into the tread of the tire
This is the closest thing I’ve got nearby currently. IDK why the internet doesn’t have pictures of this but….

Participantwow
Impressive accomplishment in support of a great cause.
We were back home (Ma) the weekend of the ride. The coverage and support are serious.
Congratulations

ParticipantGood advice fellas,
What kind of a tire/tube/wheel combo do you have?
Any chance we can get some pictures?SteveTheTech
Participant+1 data geek.
I like seeing things on Google maps.
I’ve tried Mapmyride and wasn’t sold, or got bored I forget.
I’m not convinced my phone (which is always on me and charged) can’t do a better job than a garmin, maybe with addition. I picked up something weird online, a Mainnav md-600. It has all the functions of a decent computer with coordinate logging. It worked great for training. As a beta software aficionado the accompanying software (written in Taiwanese) does actually work despite the manuals repeated attempts at foiling my attempts.
The Move bike computer software wasn’t bad, nice and simple.
GPS is great unless your under high tension lines. (I’ve seen people hit mach 3 in a fraction of a second) Crazy things happen there.
Good thread I had been curious about this topic. +1 internets.

ParticipantChris,
Very glad to hear you are safe. Pride is hard a recover and Tegaderm works great on bruises. A wreck can usually be used an a teaching moment. One of the things I really like about this forum is your incident will resonate in many of our heads on a daily basis. I ride in the Landmark area of Alexandria and there is about a 12″ concrete drainage ledge that is often broken and uneven. I too feel bad slowing traffic in some cases but it just must be done sometimes.

Now that I’ve been biking more I now watch other bikers a lot more closely here in the city to see “how they do it.” I’ve been rather alarmed/dismayed by how easily a cyclist gets “lost” in traffic, esp on a bright sunny day, because we are so small and don’t have bright lights/shiny bits.
I was going to a cycling related event yesterday in the city and was continually impressed at the things people were doing. I typically drive into the city so I tend to be focused on automotive traffic. I saw an oddly comfortable woman riding an entry hybrid on the sidewalk at about 18th and M she almost got clipped by people leaving the parking garages. One of the guys at the event was commuting to Ballston at 8pm with no helmet or lights, with a dark colored Trek and a black kit.
Why are people so reckless?

I wouldn’t think a crappy Roadmaster would be worth the hacksaw blades to make that cut
That sounds like what whomever in charge was thinking, when they decided to move it.
I’m bike friendly and that would drive me nuts after the third time it happened, I think it’s pretty funny that they left it there just for the lolz, maybe they will want to cash the aluminum (up side of a heavy sled) in at a scrap yard.
It’s still a little sad to see a still usable vehicle (wasn’t really in the bicycle level but close) rendered useless and left out to be mocked by the commuters’ bikes. But it is still there is the owner actually returns.I was in Boston recently and there are bikes everywhere…chained to everything, private property, public land. Maybe the owner thought the two cities were similar.

As I understand it, in DC that would be illegal.
Do you think that applies to the feds though?
I’m guessing for security and aesthetic purposes the fed can find justification to remove the left bike. I would be surprised if the let it sit there for more than a weekend.SteveTheTech

According to my bike computer today, I’ve got over 3,634 miles since January commuting.
Impressive. Good work, and kudos on your determination. I envy you.
Your videos and tips thus far have helped many of us noobs.
Keep up the good work.

ParticipantI personally do not think a mobile version is really needed anymore.
The large car forum I volunteer as a mod for had a large scale discussion on this topic recently. Making something that would work with tapatalk and the other mobile based readers was not deemed to be worth the work needed.Anyone with a semi smart phone should be able to render the graphics here.
I’m running Gingerbread on my HTC evo 4g and the site works great. Posts and edits properly.
I’m pretty interested to see what this awesome group a’ locals thinks
