35.1 MPH
I really want to break 40 now, but just going from 34 to 35 was a challenge.
Congrats, that is a feat to hit that type of speed on a trail. I’m sure it was as safe as it could be. That is a very respectable top speed, under “normal” conditions.
I have long wondered what the top speed of the common road bike was in this area…but I did not want to ask. lol I managed a speed within a few 10ths of a mph out in Middleburg Va once but try as I might I could not get any higher. I started to wonder how much it was going to cost to break 40. Seems like the wind resistance wall is right around that speed.

ParticipantI saw a few of these riding in a group on the wod this Saturday, between Sterling and Ashburn headed west. I had to actually turn around and stare. Those things are wild. All of the videos do nothing to make that look remotely safe. Looks fun though.
To anyone who didn’t know what these things actually are check out this video

What a foolish name…lol

ParticipantAh haa so was it fornicators or junkies, or fornicating junkies?
Riding through the woods at 2 am sounds fun,a little reckless, and kind of dangerous. kudos
I don’t know that I would make that ride without at least a stun gun, I guess the best you can realistically do is have your mobile at hand.
I would think anywhere east of Vienna would have the most interesting of characters if characters where to be encountered.

I suspected your wife had MS given the symptoms. My sister has MS too; fortunately my sis has been on some sort of medication that seems to have lessened the symptoms and stopped the attacks but regulating body temp is always a difficulty.
Too bad you will never know exactly what caused the bike to veer out of control. I hate not knowing things like that! Crashes make me more cautious but also a little more confident knowing that most of them entail little more than scratches and bumps.
Kathy,
She hates when I tell people about that, but it really goes a long way when describing the situation. You or I may approach this type of situation differently but if your vision is getting fuzzy there is not a whole lot you can do. She is a trooper though and has come a long long way in the last few years. She too is on a new fancy medicine (Gelenia, the “pill”) but there was a long time were she had daily injections and that really did a number on her quality of life. This new medication effects her heart rate a little but it really has very little in the way of side effects. Fingers crossed some of the new treatments on the horizon will improve many of the others out there with MS QoL. In the DC metro area we are fortunate to have some amazing Neurologists, there are also some real clowns out there. I guess we are fortunate to have options.
As far as what she hit. She says the last thing she remembers is hitting something like a rock. It would fit what happened but she over compensated and had to turn it was pretty much a done deal.

ParticipantSo I took my lunch today and went to talk typo some of the service staffers at a few of the shops in Alexandria. I still have the bike sitting in my shop if that means anything. Contes is the only place in the area with a back log. Everyone else can have my bike back by Thursday. At this point I’m about 30% frustrated with the situation. At least in the car works there are actual dealers too take up issues like this. The bike world its a little different.
I’m tempted to wait but I am reeeaaallliyy impatient.
How about Papullion? Anyone have good dealings with their service crew?
I am a nut for service I do not mind paying but I am a perfectionist. I’m sure many of you can relate. Is it were my bike our would be a different story but the mrs bike….

ParticipantSo I am now hunting for a shop to give her bike a good once over. Contes has a two week back log… And she actually wants to try again ( on the indoor trainer of course). But id really like to have the pros look it over. Being in the mechanical repair service industry I understand how a back log during the busy season goes but…..two weeks is a little longer than I was hoping for.
There are a couple of decent guys over at the bike pro shop on Duke st but I was less than pleased on my last trip there with their summer crew.
Big wheel is where it came from but I haven’t been back there.(another thread)
So I guess my next question is…if your significant other were in this situation would you wait for the pros or try somewhere else?

ParticipantSo it would seem that weird things really do go on in the middle of the night there. WTH
I personally find some of the areas there kind of creepy during the day I cannot imagine what 0200 looks like.
I guess that might explain the rise in dead squirrels I noted this weekend…
Do you travel with any type of protection?

Re the balance issues, is it related to any physical condition? If not, she could do some balance exercises to help improve in that area. A very basic exercise is the one-leg stand. Just stand near a wall and lift one leg up. Hold for 30 seconds if possible, then rest. Then shift to the other leg. The wall is only there in case she loses her balance. As she improves, she can add a 2nd set on each leg and/or extend the time of the exercise.
After a month or two, she could move onto more complicated and advanced exercises, such as one-leg bodyweight strength exercises, such as lunges, Swiss ball leg curls and eventually one-leg/pistol squats (but those can be tough for many people). Frequent balance and strength work, along with core exercises, can improve her balance on the bike. She will have better body control and a sense of equilibrium, on the ground and on the bike. That can help to avoid future bike accidents.
That is a great post thanks for that.
Actually she has a touch of the Multiple Sclerosis. The not only effects her bodies ability to regulate it’s core temperature and heart rate but her balance and depth perception are a bit off after sustained physical activity. She is an avid yoga participant (I think that is how that is supposed to sound) and is a stubborn as an ox so she will be back once her bike gets a clean bill of health and her arms heal. I think this type of fall (retrospectively of course) will help her in the long run gain some confidence and experience that can only be gained from an experience like that. Having a phyiscally demanding career I know that from my personal experiences what does not kill you tends to make you more cautious in the future.
The forum members here are great, next happy hour first pitcher is on me.
Enjoy the short week everyone

ParticipantI looked at the Bell website and they indeed do off crash replacement. I however paid cash, and no longer have original store receipt and am not a member at the store they were purchased at. Next time however I will add that to the collection. Interesting info thanks.
As for bandages she was way ahead of me on that one. She has been shopping the 3M (http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/3MSWC/Skin-Wound-Care/BrandsDirectory/Tegaderm/) bandages and they have something very close at CVS. Since this is a long weekend we have picked these up and order others online.
I took a look at her jersey today and it actually held up very well. Her gloves and sunglasses were left at the park in Leesburg I think. They did not crash that well but her Voler (http://www.voler.com/) jersey held kept her shoulder and back from being sanded off. It was about a fairly pricey (custom printed) but it looks like it worked very well too. We will be getting more from them.

ParticipantThanks for the advice and inspiration, everyone y’all rock.
We are no strangers to mris as she gets at least one a year. The ER doc that read her CT was a little bothered by the spots in the white matter but they were already there. She typically has some minor balance issues, as well as tingling and numbness so she is very keen to anything that would be out of the ordinary. She has a standing order for an mri and we might bump up the date if any odd symptoms arise but it really seems like the helmet did it’s job perfectly. She never had a headache following the crash.
Now we are in the market for some fancy bandages, and to pick out some new handlebar wrap. She liked the green in the store but not on the bike, and now she gets to pick a new one
She’s trying to say that she will not get back on there for a while but I think once the bruises and swelling fade we will be back out there.
As for repairing the bike I plan to water sand the shifters and to see if I can smooth their finish a little. The detents, pull and brackets seem to be intact currently. But I plan to take it to my shop for a much more thorough investigation. I also fear her front rim and rear derailer might be bent. The most important thing is her safety and staving infection…then I get to go shopping.

ParticipantI completely agree, while all lives are precious there are several things that we all can do to help save our own hides, although there will always be some risk. My hat is off to all of the city commuters.
No helmet though….sad.
I hope I don’t go out that way. Colliding with a 14 year old girl and heading off to the big trail in the sky is probably the worst possible scenario. Just illustrates that point that on a bike we everything is literally out to get us.
Be careful folks.

ParticipantBy George I think we’ve got it!!!
Her left cleat was about 1.5mm off center and .5mm off center on the left right axis. Her fore/aft seating position was adjusted about 15 mm in the aft position based on the center of the knee to end of crank arm adjustment.
I also adjusted mine and found that my cleats were about .5mm off center on both vertical cleat lines. My left/right was about 6mm off the center line of the ball of my foot to the axle. I had not been having any discomfort recently but I will be keeping more of a conscious eye on the placement.
I has also thinking of making a small visual marker on my stem to imagine a plumb line 1″ behind the handle bars. That position feels correct.
Again thanks everyone for the input. I will update after our next ride.

ParticipantThank you all, I am glad to see I am not asking for something completely out of the ordinary. Or beyond the things that should be asked about cycling.
Just when you think you have a slight grasp of what you are doing there is always something new to learn, lol I thought I was doing it right… It’s always something with this hobby.
I am going to try the fitting guide provided in CCrews’ link and assess the situation from there. My wife already has pretty shaky balance and some depth perception issues (damned ms) so we might end up with a Pro if a few basic movements either way do not effect her crippling knee pain after 30 miles.
I will update after the initial trial fitting.

Participant^ Most distracting gif ever!
I’ve seen that on TV but never had an authentic dry brisket. I’ve probably seen it on a menu but I rarely get passed pork and chicken.
If you want to try some really good classic Eastern Carolina style check out Burger Delight in Alexandria (38.807502,-77.129216) It’s been made the same way for decades. Gotta get it with slaw.
I have to say I have been pushing my wife to ride through a knee injury because I have my mind on my barbecue and barbecue on my mind.
