I’d be curious to hear what folks packed (but didn’t need/use) and what wasn’t packed, but was needed/missed…

    1) Packed – camp stove, didn’t need as many others also brought camp stove
    2) Packed – food, drink, didn’t need as everyone else brought way more awesome food than me (ramen) and brought enough to share :)
    3) Packed – tent, didn’t need as there were mostly enough beds, but I set it up anyways because dammit I dragged it all the way there
    4) Packed – rain gear, didn’t need as it didn’t rain!
    5) Packed – spare tube, didn’t need – NO FLATS
    6) Packed – bluetooth speaker – plenty of those to go around
    7) Didn’t pack – coffee, thank you Joann (Joanne?)

The shower when I got home was pretty rad. As was the two hour nap.

Mine was so nice I even opted to take a second one later in the day!

Thanks Judd for organizing and thanks everyone for making me feel welcomed and a great weekend all around.

Once I’ve spent the next week cleaning dust off my bike I’ll be on the lookout for more events around town!

Alright the bike is packed and the legs are ready. See you all tomorrow morning at Dog Tag around 11.

I’ll assume the amassed group of cyclists are you all, but be on the look for a confused guy in a white headband.

It really depends on the group. Checkout time is 10. Last year we had breakfast and enjoyed each other’s company and I think we left closer to 10.

If things go according to plan approximately what time will we be back in Georgetown Sunday?

I also have a tent if bunks are full.

OK well between this cool sounding trip and doing the DC Bike Ride last week I finally purchased a drop bar touring bike to compliment my hybrid commuter (so my wife could use the hybrid for the DCBR). I’ve got a rear rack and a pair of 20L panniers so I think I’ll have the cargo capacity for a short overnight trip, but I’m a total noob and would like suggestions on what all gear I’ll need for the trip.

Just got REI newsletter in the mail yesterday. Their Anniversary sale starts this Friday May 17 till Monday May 27(Memorial day). 20% off one full-price item(In stores/online), and 20% off REI-Outlet(Online only).

Cycling related sales; which are less than last year:

15% Off Co-op Cycles, and Electra Bikes.
15% Off All GHOST Kato & Lanao Full Suspension Bikes.
25% Off All Kryptonite Cables and Locks.
25% Off All Ortlieb Cycle Packs, and Panniers.
25% Off Garmin Edge 520 Plus Computrers.
20% Off Smith, Suncloud, and Native Eyewear Sunglasses.

Last time I bought this Kryptonite U-Lock, which is lighter(Measured 1.522 LBS with a Kitchen scale) than the standard one(about one pound lighter).

I’m sort of regretting buying the New York Fahgettaboudit lock. 4.5lb yikes. Oh well it was only $80 on Amazon. I’ll keep my off season bike locked up with it.

Interesting! I’ll have to check that functionality. When I started using Strava a few years ago it would always auto-pause at red lights. As you indicated that gives questionable results when looking at commuting times. However, the auto-pause feature is great for when you’re running errands via bike and stop in a store to pick something up. Auto-pause used to turn on if I was walking as opposed to cycling.

I did not have separate total and moving times :(

The auto pause being on or off will not affect your Strava ride data. All Strava rides include both “elapsed time” and “moving time.” Strava only counts moving time when you are actually moving, regardless of whether it is pausing or not. Your average speed is calculated against your moving time, not your elapsed.

I actually find auto-pause to be irrelevant for city riding and commuting (it’s more relevant for training and racing and centuries). I’m interested in how long it actually takes me to get somewhere, same as when one drives. Knowing that I was moving for 21 minutes of my 24 minute commute isn’t particularly useful information. It takes me 24 minutes to get to work. Full stop.
I can just imagine a car commuter with auto-pause:
“How long does it take you to drive to work?”
“17 minutes. Unless I count sitting at the traffic lights, then it’s 35.”

I can always check the ride afterward if I have an interest in my moving time and average speed.

(I do not know if auto-pause saves battery power on a phone, which might be a reason to use it)

I did this last year, started in the intermediate corral. The crowd wasn’t bad at all, but it was pouring rain all day so that may have had something to do with it. Doing it this year with a slightly larger group ~8 people. We were not riding fast – it’s not a race. Hit a crazy bump coming down the Whitehurst freeway and my U lock went flying out of my rack.

One other thing I remember is that people are trying to give you a banana like every 100’… so many bananas.

Also, all of Potomac Park was under water so the course got shortened down from 20 miles to about 15 miles.

I just wanted to comment and say that my Strava decided no longer to auto-pause a month or two ago. I can’t figure out how the heck to get that functionality back. As someone who does a lot of stopping at intersections (primarily biking in the city) it is very frustrating.

I checked to make sure the auto-pause is setup to “bike mode” and not “run mode” and that my phone’s GPS is set to high accuracy. I have no problem with it actually tracking my routes or speed, just no auto-pause :-/

City biker here – what’s the trail like going out there? Is it manageable on 700×32 tires on a Giant Escape hybrid bike?

I would love love love to do this, but it is the same day as the DC Bike Ride.

Which, being said, may make your route rather difficult with all the street closures in that part of the city?
