I was also going to mention another similarity, but this one between gun advocates and marijuana advocates. I often hear about the importance of self defense in debates. But in everyday life, I sometimes hear gun enthusiasts boast about the size and power of their home arsenals, and sometimes talk about intimidating and even shooting political opponents (!). (This is from vocal 2nd Amendment conservatives, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with self defense.) I think the gun issue has just as much to do with culture and liking guns as it has to do with self defense.
There is a gun forum that I frequent that IS the forum for all things relating to guns and MD, along with any other topic that exists. As you might guess, most of these people are conservative leaning, but I have never, never, seen anyone say or write anything about shooting someone of the opposite political party. Where do you hear this? I would almost say that could be perceived as a threat.

A tragic struggle that likely would never have happened if there had not been a CCW.
Again, off topic.
I presented Zimmerman as being a situation where close quartered physical assault was stopped with a CCW permit. I did not present Zimmerman as a point FOR CCW laws.

Of course, if he hadn’t been armed, he might not have been so bold as to stalk Martin in the first place and there wouldn’t have been an incident.
We are not talking about what Zimmerman did before the physical confrontation. We are talking about a tragic situation where someone was able to use a CCW while in the middle of a struggle.

Zimmerman.
The guy is a jackass but the fact of the matter is that he was able to draw his firearm and eliminate the threat while getting physically assaulted.

Good grief, can’t we talk about lights?
These are healthy conversations and we are actually talking about the pros and cons of a presented solution to a known problem. No one is forcing you to look at this thread.

Without basic ability to react to a physical close quarters assault, you’ll never get it out and aimed in time.
100% not true. I am not going to mention the cases because people will go nuts, but there are several cases that exist where close quarter struggles have ensued and a concealed carry weapon has saved it’s owner from gross bodily harm.

ParticipantIf you really want to see the impact of a draft get behind a SUV (or a large truck) at a stop sign. This isn’t the safest thing in the world, so it is best to do it in a quiet neighborhood, but such a vehicle can easily pull you at like 25 mph without much effort on your behalf.

Taking mixed martial arts courses for a year or two will result in you being much safer than any firearm, mace, tazer, etc. Espically if you listen to the first lesson regarding conflict, mugging, etc,…. run.
I will stick with my Glock.

Even if DC become a shall-issue state, the geographic limitations would still apply. You can’t carry into government buildings and a host of other buildings, and you couldn’t ride through major parts of downtown on the streets. And if DC became a shall-issue state, most private office buildings would also restrict it. Not that I’d really want to carry a weapon anyway, between the weight and the need to secure it all the time. Finally, I’m not sure you’d really have time to access it with most of these attacks. The assailants usually try to use the element of surprise. I’ve ridden here in DC for nearly 30 years, through some rough neighborhoods when the City in general was more dangerous than it is now. I always felt the advantage I had was the ability to boogie away quickly from a potential threat before anything bad could happen, rather than staying to confront it.
I think you would actually be OK in most parts of DC. Federal buildings would be a no-go though. The legality of carrying on parkland is dependent on the gun laws of the jurisdiction where the park is located, so the mall, monuments, etc. would all be fair game. They are fair game right now if you have a DC permit.
Ideally, DC would go shall issue and federal offices would have lockers in the lobby where you could store your weapon. A guy can dream right?

But… these are knock-down assaults, with little warning or chance to draw. Clearly, we need to escalate:
Might be over 49cc so it might not be allowed on the trail.
If i get knocked off my bike though, having “it” could still me a difference.
Like I said, let people start carrying in DC and the thugs will seriously give more consideration to who they want to mess with.

There are assaults on trails in states with less restrictive gun laws too.
There are, but at least people in those states have the option of self defense.

DC is a may-issue jurisdiction. MPD said applicants would need a specific reason for issuance, and they cited living in a dangerous neighborhood or being a cab driver as not being good enough reasons. So it’s unlikely riding the MBT would qualify.
May issue for now, anyway. Several things could change that. From how I follow it, the court can still say that DC’s “May issue” legislation is still in violation of the ruling (which it is, IMO).
If DC’s may issue infrastructure passes muster, expect a multiyear lawsuit against DC.

ParticipantI rock this light as my “low beam” and a 340 lumen cygolite as my “high beam.”
The low beam is aimed at the ground about 10 feet in front of me. It is so bright though, I usually cover it with my hand when I come upon someone. Before I realized how bright it was, I used it like a regular light and people were cussing me out on a routine basis. Even cars at 4 way stops would drop a few f bombs.
