ParticipantThere seems to be a dearth of stations in S. Arlington. Most have been concentrated in the Orange line corridor. Housing there is pretty dense with SFH and hirises and there are a good # of businesses in the Columbia Pike corridor. I don’t think there is a station on Glebe Rd between 50 and Columbia pike, for example.

ParticipantUpdating my original post. Yes, all that bike parking to the left of Union station is now gone. There are a smaller # of noodles in that cubby area by the Bikestation place. Not as much as before unfortunately. I went there the other day, all the bike parking was taken and I had to lock up my bike to a parking meter across the street. Sigh.

Yes, southbound Washington Blvd has a continuous wide paved shoulder and no ramp crossings from 2nd St S (actually S Walter Reed Dr/Uhle St) and the exit ramp to Columbia Pike. It’s fast and direct, perfectly legal, and reasonably safe for bicycling, but be alert for debris on the shoulder.
The closest nearby through street, S Courthouse Rd, is considerably less direct and requires riding the entire downhill segment of Columbia Pike from S Courthouse Rd to the Washington Blvd interchange.
The yellow warning signs referenced in the original message are for the short sidepath along Washington Blvd between Rte 50 and the S Walter Reed Dr/Uhle St exit ramp, where the sidepath crosses high-speed highway exit and entrance ramps. That sidepath will someday be extended south to Columbia Pike, but the existing shoulder is perfectly adequate for southbound bicycling by competent adult cyclists.
Thanks, Allen. Will give it a shot.

ParticipantAgree with Kathy. Watch her carefully. I read about someone who was roughly my age (early 40s) and worked at W Lee high school. He was involved in an accident with a car. I think he came home told his wife about it and went to bed. He went into a coma, did not come out of it and died. Similar to that Redgrave actress who hit something while skiing and also died.

ParticipantWhat I’m trying to avoid is Col Pike. That downhill during rush hour traffic is ok. But you get the occassional driver who honks b/c he can’t understand why you’re not riding the sidewalk.
