ParticipantHey Team 16! I hope all is well with everyone. It looks like everyone successfully connected to our Strava Club. It’s been fun to watch your cold weather bike exploits.
An announcement – unfortunately Karen had to drop out of Freezing Saddles so we have a new team member – Kevin Strumwasser. Welcome Kevin!
It feels like we were getting close to a name – 16 Saddles. Does that work for everyone. Anyone have another idea they want to throw into the mix?
Are folks feeling up for a Meetup or ride this weekend?
Layer up and ride on!
Eric

ParticipantThis may be entirely too complicated but is there a way to create a points system that rewards the nervous newbie with extra points for riding more often or longer. In other words can we create a scoring system that rewards challenging oneself and improvement.
Shepard
ParticipantMaybe it’s based on an average over the first 2 to 3 weeks. That way unusual weather events won’t knock a bunch of folks off. Also, self-selection might work if we have both “competitive” and “casual” teams.
Shepard
ParticipantThat seems like a good baseline.

ParticipantJust a couple of thoughts.
I generally enjoyed the mileage cap and point system – thought it helped balance the teams.
With regard to team selection and size. I’ve had both local and non-local teams. With local teams there are more opportunities for meet ups and rides but the non-local encouraged me to join other rides and ride with a different variety of folks. So no real preference.
It might be fun to try random teams just to see if Steve O’s calculations bear out.
Smaller teams would be fine if we could drop non-performers. A team of six would be devastated if it has two folks who decided they would only ride when the weather was “nice.” Teams of ten can better handle a couple fair weather riders.

ParticipantAnd Feds who get furloughed have an advantage over those who don’t.
Etc.Steve O’s point a few posts back made me realize there were a number of odd variables this year. My typical commute is 30 or so miles a day. When I was furloughed I lost that base and had to balance biking against a long list of projects at home. The 100 mile cap pushed me to get out and ride during January. Without it I would have done a lot more sleezing.
Also, the snow and furloughed NPS trail crew rendered my usual commute (down the CCT) impassable so on days when I was called back my commutes were much shorter and again the cap became a goal.
All in all, whatever system is used is going to have it’s own set of unintended consequences. I enjoyed this year (and not just because I got to captain team 7) considerably more than previous years because the goals for the teams were achievable. Really (aside from the pointless prizes) FS is two competitions. A team competition, which provides me with a lot of motivation to get out there and ride, and and individual competition, which really does noting for me personally.
The individual competition remained essentially unchanged and those who wanted to spend a lot of winter miles in the saddle were recognized for it.
Regional teams might be nice but my first years in FS I was stuck on a random MD team that was almost as geographically spread out as my team this year which made group rides or get together nearly impossible. So not much changed for me this year.

OK meet you there. Others on the team feel free to join us if this of interest. You can text me at 240-393-7328.
Sounds good. 15-16 mph is plenty fast. We could meet about 7:45 am or so. That’d give us plenty of time. By Beach and Pinehurst, I assume you mean that little parking lot along Beach just up from the DC line? Yes, could meet you there.

This sounds great but I have a refrigerator coming tomorrow morning so, sadly, I am going to miss this one. Next time. Have a great ride!
