Since I know folks have been dying with anticipation[/sarcasm], I thought I’d give a quick update on my thinking for how the combined prize will be scored. At least at this point (I’m sure things will change a bit come March) – I think using combined miles wouldn’t make a lot of sense given how much weight would go to the #kidical standings. There are 7 names on each leaderboard, 4 have points on each, so 10 total people represented. However, there are about 350 total #kidical miles and just under 40 #withkid miles at the moment, so total mileage would look pretty close to the #kidical table. Right now at least, I’m thinking of using the average of the share of total mileage from each leaderboard.

For an example of how that works as of this morning (all figures rounded to the nearest whole number):

    • Jon would be in first place since he has 27% of the #kidical miles and 40% of the #withkid miles, for an average of 33%.
    • I’m in second place with 56% of the #kidical miles and 0% of the #withkid miles, for an average of 28%.
    • Shawn is in third place with 0% of the #kidical miles and 39% of the #withkid miles, for an average of 19%.

This approach still isn’t final, but it’ll probably be something very much like this unless there’s a dramatic shift in the numbers that would dictate some other approach being “fairer” (in my opinion as the prize-giver). :)

I’m just happy to be on a leaderboard!

What would you think about Black Squirrel? I know it’s a bit of the beaten path, but not too far from W&OD by the Dunn Loring metro.

We usually start somewhere with parking a do a loop (or something close to a loop). No shaming in driving to the ride.

We’re open, so if there’s something that would work for you, we can do that. Maybe a loop ending at Westover for lunch? (I was kinda thinking a looping ending at Westover for S’mores, but that would be evening)…

I know its late notice, but I got approval to take the kids on a Saturday ride. I’m just outside the beltway in VA, but I’d take them into Arlington or wherever if the riding is better. Let me know!

So, it sounds like there might be demand for a Kidical Mass ride this Saturday…?

Where and when on Saturday? I can’t commit yet but might be open to a ride in the morning.

I don’t want to belabor the point, but requiring the prize to be related to having a child attached to your body or bike is kind of lame. Kidical mass is all about getting kids out on the streets riding their bikes weather attached to a grown-up or independently. I understand that those have been the rules before but I think it’s time for a change.

Looking at the leaderboard, it just dawned on me that maybe not everyone reads pages and pages of discussion threads on the internet, particularly regarding silly games that don’t involve coffee, beer, or whatever the heck Calvinball/Nivlacball is becoming. So, though it’s on the list, folks may not know about the #kidical pointless prize and how it works. Or maybe there really are only 3 of is in this year’s Freezing Saddles that have taken kids on our bikes so far.

In any event, as mentioned here, for the purposes of this competition, #kidical rides are those where one or more children are somehow attached to your bike and being carried with you. Seats on cargo bikes, trailercycles, front or rear seats, duct-taped to handlebars where legal – all count the same. Kids riding alongside of you? Awesome…but not part of this. Kidjoring? Maybe illegal, maybe awesome – but definitely not part of this.

To get credit, just use the hashtag #kidical as part of your ride title (saving separate rides for any trips where you have the kid(s) only part of the way). As others can attest to, you can combine #kidical rides with other things, like #beerneuring_responsibly, so multitask away! The traditional leaderboard (straight mileage – no “days” or anything else factored in) can be found at https://freezingsaddles.com/pointless/kidmiles. I’ve a few other ideas for possible prizes that are a bit more random/shorter duration to broaden the winner pool if/when it looks like there’s a chance that could mean something, so log your (eligible) miles! All prizes will be small and of nominal value but hopefully at least a little awesome-ish for either you and/or the kid(s).

(As the pointless prize sponsor, while I’m claiming eligibility to compete for whatever bragging rights there are, I will not give myself any actual prize. Probably.)

So I apparently had not read the rules before. My kids have never been interested in riding on the bike with me, they have always insisted on riding independently. I am a bit disheartened that the rules call for attachment…

Definitely going to ride big this weekend, just not sure who/what/where/when yet. Debating a chill century-ish ride for one of the days. WOD to Leesburg, grab lunch, ferry across the Potomac, C&O back to DC, grab coffee, ride back home.

That’s a bit bigger than I can handle, I’ve only gone about 30 miles at once so far. I need to remember I’m still a lightweight!

Hey all, any plans for big rides this weekend? I was thinking about joining the one at the link below on Sunday mid-morning.

I forgot to mention, this is my first FS. I have done a few sub-20 rides already this year and pan to keep them going whenever I can. My trusty steed is pictured. f7dc065f29d906f476b2fee900c2089e.jpg

Hi all, sorry I wasn’t able to make the happy hour, I’m in the Springfield burbs and had a kid engagement last night. I’m happy to be part of the team and to get some rides in.
I ride to work near Mosaic District once or twice a week and have done a bit of off-road riding at Wakefield and Fountainhead. I just joined the gym that is just over a mile from my house so I’m planning to do some sleaze rides there as well.
I’m looking forward to meeting some of you during the season.
    Cheers,
    Shawn
