ParticipantI started bike commuting in 2007 at the encouragement of a work colleague. I moved to Vancouver, Canada for a job after college and I could barely pay my rent with my low pay at an architecture firm. Trying to find ways to save money, I traded daily bus fare for my mom’s old Peugeot. My mom is a tiny woman and I had no clue about bike sizing, tire pressure, and that seat posts are adjustable. I started bike commuting in the dead of winter because certain people in my life told me that I was a quitter and would never stick with it. If I couldn’t bike in the worst weather, I knew I wouldn’t be able to do it when the weather was nice. Bike commuting was liberating and meant I wasn’t eating rice and beans every night. Fast forward to grad school in Pittsburgh, cycling was my only way to get to and from campus during odd hours when sane people are sleeping. Fast forward to my summer internship in DC in 2010. I was living in Brookland with no car and the met branch trail was just completed and very scary. Fast forward to now- I started biking because I was too poor to afford public transit. Now I have a much better job and I would not be where I am without the grit, commitment, and determination that cycling has forced me to develop. Everywhere I’ve lived has had this great cycling counter-culture and the people are more real and genuine than anyone you’d meet elsewhere

I’m hosting a President’s Day Ride again this year. In recognition of the bicentennial of the Great State of Illinois, this year’s ride will visit sites associated with the four Presidents who have called Illinois home: Lincoln, Grant, Reagan and Obama. I’m planning just 6 stops this year. At each stop I’ll share some history of the site or individual. I’ve tried to pick sites that for the most part you probably haven’t visited. (I’ve only been to two myself). I’ll once again try to tie historical events to the present.
The official ride will meet at the Lincoln Memorial at 10:30. I plan to get rolling by 10:45. The ride will end at the Lincoln Cottage, which has a museum and also does tours of the cottage (tours are $15). I’m planning on visiting the museum. Scheduling a tour of the cottage with an unknown number of folks arriving at an unknown time will be too unwieldy, so I opted not to include it as part of the ride. If the weather is nice (it was awesome last year) I may do a half DC loop back to Virginia.
I’m planning on starting the morning by having pancakes at Lazy Mike’s in Falls Church at 8 a.m. There was a great crowd there last year.
Hope to see you one the ride.
Omg- last year’s was amazing. I’m RSVPing for this NOW!!!

ParticipantYou are both awesome Jeff & Judd. Better yet, join WABA and make a donation. As a Princess Georgian, I am indebted to them for the Anacostia East and West Bank trails. Amazing stuff and much more to accomplish!
