ParticipantSplinter groups, pontoons, knee high mud, arks…. this is going to be way too much fun! What next, rubber chickens? My personal goal is to get covered in enough rain and mud that I look as bad ass as Casey Bailey during a gravel cross race.

ParticipantFirst try at packing… lessons learned…harder packing for two!

If you’re interested in coming, buy your lawn tickets which are general seating and RSVP on this thread. This show will probably sell out so don’t wait too long to buy your tickets!
The show starts at 8:00 and the doors open at 6:30. With a planned sell out, the lawn will be crowded so we’ll try to arrive close to 6:30. Let’s plan to meet up at the Vienna Whole Foods for picnic supplies early enough to leave around 6:00.
One other thing to note: Wolf Trap shows are rarely canceled due to weather and the lawn seats are fully exposed. So be prepared if it rains. And really, what’s the chance of evening thunderstorms in August? 😎
I bought tix tonight due to this posting. My plus 1 is tbd, however I plan on baking Steve one god awful cupcake as I feel like his post may have been angling for a sweet and delicious treat

ParticipantIt’s unfortunate that such with such a great bike lane design EVERYONE feels safe and comfortable away enough from cars to use it. I think the big missed opportunity is that you the pedestrian sidewalk is not nearly as nice of inviting as the bike lane. This should be a lesson to pedestrian and bike trail planning advocate alike- equal consideration of pedestrian and cyclist must be accommodated if we are to make trails that allow for different modes and speed of travel.

I reported this to 311, ddot, and sent a nasty gram to the tour bus company on the first day I saw it last week. When I tried to (politely) tell the tour bus driver he was parked in the bike lane he waved me off and turned his back to me quite rudely. I haven’t bothered to report it when I’ve seen it every single day since then since I’ve generally been rushed. Last night around 7 there were 3-4 buses parked in the lane.
I’ve reinstalled my bike camera, so maybe I’ll get back to reporting it daily if I have the time.
Jerk faces! I will do so as well. Maybe if more people complain it will help.

ParticipantThere has also been increased enforcement on the MBT for those that use that trail.

That really really sucks. Why 3 points? Whose decision is that? Considering the relative lethality of the infractions (I.e. that drunk driving kills 10,000 people in the US annually), if a DUI is three points, failing to stop on a bike should be about 0.0003 points. Maybe less. Are Arlington’s hands tied in this matter or could they choose to be more fair and rational??
Agreed – granted statistics indicate the MD drivers are worse than their DMV counterparts, but frankly I chalk most of this up to poor education to the Arlington County police on bike laws and a very antiquated road law system that preferences cars and makes for illogical interpretations for situations when cyclists are riding on the roads “acting” as vehicles. The laws should be updated to better protect pedestrians and cyclists in Arlington. I have a hard time faulting the cop, the judge, and even my insurance company when the laws are so poorly written and enforced.

FS: Litespeed Saber
I bought this bike in June 2002 from Spokes in Alexandria, and used it in a bunch of triathlons and training rides. This is a really nice bike, but I haven’t done a triathlon in 5 years and have only ridden it a few times since my last race. It has a titanium frame with a carbon fork and seat stays, Ultegra 9-speed components, and some nice upgrades such as a Thomson seatpost and hand built wheels. I upgraded the headset to a Cane Creek IS-8, and upgraded the aero bars to Vision Tech. (If you don’t like those, I have some other sets I can include.) I also replaced the saddle.
I am an amateur mechanic and have taken very good care of the bike. I’ve ridden it only 1,555 miles. The tires are a bit old and would probably have to be replaced, but otherwise it’s in excellent shape.
Size is a 55 cm. I’m 5’9″, and usually ride a 55 or sometimes a 56 road bike.
Price: $1,000 firm.

Those bike lanes are NOT pointless. They allow DDOT to brag about how many miles of bike lanes they’ve installed without actually inconveniencing any Maryland drivers. You didn’t think bike lanes were meant to benefit cyclists, did you?
Those Murrland drivers… always causing problems

Just like to pass this announcement along:
ARLINGTON, Va. – On Tuesday, May 1, 2018 the Arlington County Police Department’s Special Operations Section will be promoting the 2018 Spring Pedestrian & Bicyclist Safety Awareness Program in the Virginia Square area. Additionally, on Tuesday, May 2, 2018, they will be in the Columbia Pike corridor.
Officers will enforce traffic laws at the following locations as part of this program:
May 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Fairfax Drive and North Kenmore Street
May 3rd from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Columbia Pike and South Oakland StreetThe program is part of the 2018 Street Smart Pedestrian, Driver, and Bicyclist Safety Campaign which will run from April 16th through May 13th. The program aims to change pedestrian, driver and bicyclist behavior while reducing the number of traffic related crashes and injuries. To accomplish this, officers will ticket motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians who violate traffic laws.
Each year, pedestrians and bicyclists account for a quarter of the traffic fatalities in the region, nearly 90 deaths per year. The Arlington County Police Department participates in numerous enforcement campaigns throughout the year in support of its commitment to improving transportation safety in the County. These campaigns combine public education and high-visibility enforcement to ensure that all travelers share the road safely.
Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to pay attention to one another and always proceed with caution and care for each other’s safety. For additional safety information, please visit the Street Smart website and remember to be a PAL—predictable, alert and lawful—while using the roadways.
Members of the media are invited to attend either event.
Hmmm… not sure if this posting was for my benefit after my ticket for not stopping at a stop sign on my bike last year. A word to the wise- if you do get caught, ticketed, and unsuccessfully contest in court, Arlington will assess 3 points against your drivers license (even if you live in MD and even though it is a bike infraction) which is equivalent to a DUI. Depending on your car insurance company, they may increase your car insurance premiums and make you take a drivers ed course. I would highly advocate not getting caught.
Sadly, I never made it onto TV or the evening news since I only appeared on police body cam and never filed my Freedom of Information Act to get said footage.

ParticipantSo appreciative of all the forum folks that came out to this advocacy event today. I appreciate that you care about planning in areas that you bike through and for encouraging me to be a better advocate in my own neighborhood.
