ParticipantTried the bridge coming from custis and MVT this morning. Horrible- so many crossings of the parkway. Serious driver road rage refusing to stop at crosswalks for pedestrians, wheelchairs, and strollers. Witnessed a road worker almost get mowed down replacing Lane cones. Should have taken TR bridge and cut my way through the city. If it’s bad now, I hate to think what it will be like is the summer with all the buses and tourists.

I took the bridge this morning. Coming from Arlington cemetery, I stayed on the North sidewalk to bike across the open, northern pathway. It was a little out of the way ending up on the north side of Lincoln monument and crossing the crosswalks at 23rd Street to parallel the reflecting pool, but not awful. We’ll see how the evening commute fares.
Memorial Bridge is garbage in the evening commute. North sidewalk was packed. Drivers speeding off the bridge to get on the parkway have no visibility of pedestrians or cyclists coming off the bridge from the North crosswalk. Flags at the intersection are ineffective. I waited for at least 10 cars before anyone stopped and only after I yelled and angrily shook my fist. Wishing there was a “non-elite” button.

ParticipantI have an extra appropriately themed cycling cap that should be a ride door prize. Most moon cakes eaten in 10 minutes wins the cap? Someone think of something better…

I’m interested in the orange one. Because it’s beautiful – because orange! I usually wear a small though, so might be stupid. But I bet it’ll look fine a li’l loose, given no sleeves.
Also interested in your black bolero, which is my size & would look great with it (especially at Halloween [emoji38]) Tempted to ask you to bring them on tomorrow’s Asian food ride – but if it’s really pouring is possible I’ll bail….

Nadine,
I’ll bring both to the ride tomorrow. The bolero would fit you perfectly for sure!

A group of folks from the forum set out on a quest to ride every bike lane in Arlington yesterday. Komorebi planned the route using the 2017 Arlington Bicycle Map supplemented with Google and some Twitter tips for lanes that had been installed since the map was last updated.
The full ride was 74 miles and over 4,000 feet of climbing with a 200+ step cue sheet. Komorebi, Josh and Chris were able to complete the full route. Casey Kane and I made it 54 miles before being defeated by the hilly bike lanes of North Arlington. Several folks were able to join for at least part of the ride.
For those that would like to give it a try, the route we used is here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28592740
Komorebi does a last minute review of the map before the ride:
Sarah Bee was on brand in her Bike Arlington jersey.
The three finishers:
This was such a great ride- for many reasons. With all the inclement weather, fallen trees in trails, and the upcoming Disaster Relief Trials, knowing multiple routes to get to a destination by bike is essential. I was further reminded of this in the forum discussion about Fairfax County bike lanes. I realized as a transitioning resident to Fairfax County- I don’t know a full on road route to work, to my house in MD, to most places. With Freezing Saddles arriving soon and we know how bad the WOD can be when iced over and not plowed- what is my back up plan? I don’t have one! That is why this ride was so important. If your normal route is not an option, do you have a good, safe back up plan. This ride was super helpful and made me realize I have some work to do. Thank you to the lovely as always @Komorebi for a fun ride and that much needed AHA moment.

Ooo ooo! Let me see if I can talk Mr. Kitty into this. It might be a mileage stretch for him, but I think he can do it.

Mr. Bee [emoji219] is in too. Sharing of moon cakes may be a stretch for him- but I think he can do it.

Why: In Taiwan, China, and other parts of Asia, Mid-Autumn Festival is the second biggest holiday of the year, after Chinese New Year. It’s a time to get together with friends and family, appreciate the full moon, and eat moon cakes. It’s also a good excuse to visit two of my favorite places for Asian food in Northern Virginia.
When: Sunday, September 23. (Yes, yes, I know that this is technically the day before this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.)
Where: Meet at Best Buns in Shirlington at 10:30 a.m. if you want coffee. We’ll roll out at 11:00 a.m. and have lunch at The Block, an Asian food hall in Annandale. Afterwards, we’ll head to Good Fortune in the Eden Center, a Chinese-Vietnamese supermarket that sells moon cakes and other Asian groceries. The route is about 19 miles, mostly on trails or bike lanes, but also on a few busier roads.
Who: anyone who wants in on the deliciousness! Social pace (12-15 mph), no drop.
What: bring money for lunch and a lock. I will also be bringing my panniers so that I can stock up on tasty Asian groceries at Good Fortune.
Very much in. Sounds like a great ride. Thanks for organizing!!!

Question about bags for a ride like this-
I haven’t done many of these longer rides. I like to be prepared with food, a rain jacket, maybe a change of clothes (and I’m riding there). What bag do you all use for this?
I have a waterproof ortlieb pannier but it’s big. I have backpacks but they make for too much extra sweat!
I actually think one of those handlebar bags might be best bec. I like having it where I can see it. Oh yes…U-lock. Gotta carry that too.!
I’ve thought about a fanny pack too…I see they coming back into style!

Fanny packs have always been in style. I am a huge fan of the fanny pack and will definitely be rocking mine 80s style on the ride. Come to the fanny side!

ParticipantMy only regret about this ride – besides it raining every year- is that it conflicts with Reji’s ride that looks really really fun… whomp whomp.

ParticipantI will be riding tomorrow too, SteveO!
