ParticipantI would love to see this theory tested out in downtown Arlington. If you took away the bike lanes on Clarendon and Wilson, would driver behavior change? I don’t feel safe at all in those unprotected bike lanes with the daily shenanigans I encounter. Would no bike lanes increase or decrease the shenanigans? Perhaps Arlington should perform their own experiment to inform best practices for new infrastructure.

ParticipantDo you think Range Rover’s drive anywhere on anything advertising & marketing contributed to a Range Rover driver attempting to do just that? Also- who knew Edmonton has so many attractive police officers? This may be a contributing factor to delinquency…

ParticipantInteresting that though male cycling deaths increased, female cycling deaths decreased. I would love to see a follow up study on the variables contributing to the gender disparity.

The Friends of Dyke Marsh are hosting an event called Raptor Rapture. They’ll have live raptors to see up close. I’m planning on going since I see all kinds of raptors on the Potomac and 4MR all the time and don’t know the name of any of them. There’s also at least one active eagle nest in Dyke Marsh right now so hopefully we’ll be treated to an eagle flyby.
I’m planning on stopping for a doughnut and coffee at Sugar Shack in Old town (804 N Henry St, Alexandria, VA 22314) at 9 a.m. before heading over.
From the Friends of Dyke Marsh:
April 20, Raptor Rapture, The Friends of Dyke Marsh, Secret Gardens Birds and Bees, the National Park Service and the Monarch Teachers Network will “host” live raptors, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Belle Haven Park. You can see big birds up close. FreeHope to see you there.
– JuddBig bird and velociraptors! This sounds like an amazing excursion!

If you missed my Freezing Saddles group ride & private tour, I’m organizing a second (warmer!) outing to Washington National Cathedral… The only place on earth you’ll find Darth Vader’s head carved in stone, the only U.S. president laid to rest in D.C., an actual piece of our moon, and the active construction of the world’s largest publicly-built LEGO cathedral. Beautiful art, architecture and craftsmanship abound throughout the awe-inspiring spaces of this active church.
***Please Note: Due to some of the smaller spaces in the building that I plan to share, my guided tour of the cathedral will be limited to the first 15 registered attendees***
***Eventbrite registration is necessary, here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/national-cathedral-group-ride-private-tour-tickets-59850822421***
Meet
Saturday, May 18, 8:00am gather at Velo Cafe (730 Maine Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024)
Rollout at 8:30am
Note: In the event of a drenching weather forecast for the ride, I will postpone the ride & notify everyone Friday night.Route
Approximately 7-8 miles on D.C. streets with 3 brief stops for tie-ins with the cathedral’s early history.Pace
No drop. Stop signs & red lights obeyed; casual city-street pace.
Anticipating arrival at the cathedral by 10:15.
The private tour of the cathedral then runs approximately 75-90 minutes.Bathrooms
Available at Velo Cafe and also at the cathedral. What To Bring
- Bike lock — a bike rack is available in the cathedral’s parking garage, but depending on final group size, we may need to lock-bikes-to-bikes, etc.
- Non-cleat/clip shoes to change into (or covers leaving no exposed metal) — to protect the cathedral’s marble floors.
- Outer ‘street clothes‘ over your biking attire — if your attire is particularly aero or revealing. Donning shorts and a t-shirt would suffice.
- Camera (photography is permitted in the cathedral.)
- $12 for Touring Admission to Washington National Cathedral (cash/credit accepted at the Welcome Desk.)
- Optional: Additional funds for adding LEGOs to the model, and/or for group lunch.
Note: The cathedral has no lockers or storage space for personal belongings, nor is food/drink permitted inside.
Lunch (optional):
Just up the street is Cactus Cantina for a tasty group lunch.Having attended the last ChristoB50 ride to National Cathedral, cannot recommend it highly enough. This was wonderful; change your prior plans and go on this ride & best docent led tour!

In addition to the Clever Photo Caption award, I also awarded 4 Bicycle Icicles to those who rode in sub-zero (Fahrenheit) temps. One had to bike somewhere not in the DC area to accomplish this.
They were:
HF and Sarah Bee (who took a ski trip to Maine, with a side bike ride. Or is that a bike trip to Maine with a side ski trip?)
Kate “donut rides” O, who lives in Colorado Springs and where it got really, really cold at least once this winter
Bob James, who crazy-mindedly moved to Michigan last year. But then again, it got him a bicycle icicle, so maybe it’s all worth it.Will travel for pointless prizes!

We could go the NASCAR route and take the top 8 teams and reset their points to zero with 2 weeks to go. We could have an independent commission rank the teams based on non-mileage factors and have head-to-head playoffs in March. Teams in 4 divisions and the division winners go head to head at the end. The possibilities are endless.
Jon- that is madness… March madness!!!!
March 22, 2019 at 12:56 am in reply to: Discussion on Team Points Cap and Non-regional Teams #1097201SarahBee
ParticipantSo I liked the team mileage cap this year, however once we got through the first few weeks, trying to catch other teams on the leaderboard became a real challenge. For example, I tanked my team by having a bad week and not meeting my 100. Knowing I had irreparably cannonballed 17, all I could focus on were individual goals like my mileage goal this year. I recently moved and my commute is at least 10 miles longer per day than before, so I blame myself for underreporting my anticipated mileage that may have botched team assignments. Regional teams make a lot of sense since I can’t always control when I’m working early mornings or nights. I like social events when they are convenient- this year I found myself going on rides with other teams if it fit my schedule better. Most of the MD folks I met when I was on a regional team a few years back and that was a lot of fun since I didn’t know that many fellow cyclists in my neighborhood. Mostly, I just want to thank all the people who volunteer their time and IT skills to make Freezing Saddles the only thing I enjoy about winter. Regardless of the rules, you are all amazing and I appreciate all you do!

The ticket is dated Tuesday. Is that when you found it on your bike, or did it just get lost/blown around/tossed there today? (That plate has 5 other unpaid tickets for the past month in DC.)
It was on my bike on Tuesday right on the top tube closer to about 3pm. I was stunned when I saw the pink slip, but who knows how it got there? Do you think anyone at DC DMV will have a sense of humor?
