Beerneuring #5 at Aslin Beer Company

Definitely my favorite brewery so far! Tasting menu again:

1. Dunley Place, a DIPA. Totally my favorite! Creamy and smooth. Very balanced with orange and floral notes. Brought home a growler of this one.
2. Mind the Hop, another DIPA. Creamy like the Dunley. Pleasant bitter hops with faint floral notes on the finish.
3. Bringing Sexy Back, an IPA. Bright citrus on the palate and nice bitterness on the finish. Makes me think of Spring.
4. Deceiver, an imperial stout. These are always hit-or-miss for me and this one hit! Balanced cocoa and malty goodness with a pleasant lingering sweetness on the finish.

What are you waiting for? Go there! It’s now my go-to brewery off the WOD.

Beerneuring #4 at Mad Fox

4 tasters:
The Ambassador, a pale ale. Orange and grapefruit notes with a faint pepper finish.
The H Street, a Belgian style imperial pale ale. My favorite, full bodied and well balanced with smooth grapefruit notes and a hoppy finish.
Broad Street, a forgettable IPA. Really expected more with a 7.2% ABV
Batch 500, an imperial stout. What? it’s like a stout and a barleywine had a baby. Light mouthfeel but with all the depth of a hearty stout.

Beerneuring #3 at Port City with many BAFS16 participants. Had the Revival Oatmeal Stout which was surprisingly light bodied. Tangy with a light malty finish.

It looks like the easiest way to handle going to Port City is to go with the group leaving from Best Buns in Shirlington. Unless someone objects, let’s plan to meet there before the 10:00 departure, rather than at the Blumont caboose.

I’ll see you there!

Yep, I’m reji (aka Robyne). We met and chatted a bit. Hope to see you out on the trails sometime soon!

This Saturday at 10:45 Port City Brewery is having its Pedals ‘N’ Pints short ride. It is a very mellow 10 mile ride from the brewery and back, followed by the option of having beer and food from a food truck. I can lead a ride from the caboose on the W&OD in Bluemont, from there it is an about 7 mile/40 minute ride. Some of the route is on Walter Reed and Braddock Rd, so comfort riding with traffic is needed. I’d leave at 9:50 sharp. If you’d rather not ride there, you can drive to the brewery and meet up there. Please let me know if you are interested. Note that the route is not 100% smooth, so commuter/cross/hybrid bikes are best. You can get more info on the ride here:http://www.portcitybrewing.com/events/pedals-n-pints-the-short-ride-january/

Hey Capt’n Steve! I was hoping to ride my commuter with road 28’s but I have the option to ride my CX with 32 nobbies. I’m fine with “not 100% smooth” but do you think the 28’s can handle the terrain or do you recommend switching to the CX? Thanks!

Anyone up for a ride Monday? I think I will take the holiday off of work. I’d plan to start at Monday Morning Pancakes in Falls Church and end somewhere?

I’d love to but I’ll be out of town Sun and Mon. Have an extra pancake for me! (One of these days, I’m going to join MMPC!)

I hope that everyone is getting some riding done on this beautiful day. Now that we have all but one team member accounted for, I’d like to make some general comments to the team.

First, welcome to Freezing Saddles. This is my fourth year doing it and it is a blast. You get to meet great people and find that you will ride your bike much more than expected. The more you put into it, the more fun you will have. Although no one is expected to ride every day (though some will), this is a bicycle riding event so there is the expectation for everyone to ride at least a few times a week.

Second, the key for the team to do well is to ride as many days as possible. Riding a mile each day gets more points for the team each week (77) than doing one 50 mile ride on the weekend (60). There is also something relaxing about riding a mile or two around the neighborhood in the morning or evening.

Third, let everyone know on this thread what you’d like to do as a team. We can do rides, meet ups, etc. It seems to me that everyone is somewhere between Alexandria and Fairfax, so maybe Falls Church is a good central location for meeting up? Feel free to post any suggested rides.

Fourth, there is a consensus for Salty Dogs, so hence forth we are Team 14 Salty Dogs! I will use the avatar suggested by Chris for the Strava team.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cap’n Steve

I’ll try to ride every day but that will depend on how much snow/ice Mother Nature throws at us this winter. My quinquennial bones tend to break when they hit pavement. Weather notwithstanding, it will also depend on how well my joints and muscles handle daily rides. :p

Other than Tuesdays, my weekday evenings are mostly free and am open to meet ups in the Arlington, Falls Church, Vienna or Fairfax areas. I also try to get out every weekend and will post my plans if they’re concrete, though they’re often last minute decisions. I am playing the Beerneuring side bet and while I don’t expect to win (or even come close), brewery destinations are high on my list!

Looking forward to biking with some teammates – go Salty Dogs!

Beerneuring #2 at Crooked Run Brewery in Leesburg

Sampler of 5:

1. Logan’s Song an English Pale Ale. Not bad, though not memorable either. Just there. Probably the best of the bunch.
2. Cherry Cayenne Storm, a cherry/cayenne infused IPA. Nope, this beer needs to figure out what it wants to be.
3. Mango Garuda, a pilsner malt IPA (?) infused with mango. Another nope, though more tolerable than the Cherry Storm.
4. Shadow of Truth, a black Belgian triple. Light bodied, a little tangy.
5. Biscotti Stout, an imperial stout but way too sweet.

Definitely won’t rush back for the beer, but the journey was awesome!

Hi all! Change in plans for today’s ride. I’m going to head west on the WOD to Leesburg to hit Crooked Run brewery. Look for me if you head that way. Gonna be a great day for a ride!

Love the bull dog mascot! Now if someone could photoshop the Salty Dog logo on the dog’s hat, it would be perfect!

Robyne from Fairfax here – great to meet some of my teammates at HH last night. I’m glad to be on a local team too – getting to the HH was a bit of an adventure. Getting home was even more so but after I lugged my bike up the stairs to the towpath, I was on my way! This suburban gal don’t do cities very well. 😮

Looking forward to some team rides – anyone up for Beerneuring tomorrow? I’m thinking of headed down to Lorton to visit Forge and Fair Winds. And I don’t have a better team name so Salty Dogs is fine by me. But if we’re going for the pirate theme, shouldn’t we be Rumneuring too?

Old Ox Brewery, just off the WOD ~MM24. I had The Big Tasty, an imperial stout. It was smooth with bitter cocoa notes. Started great, but had a soapy aftertaste that I wasn’t fond of.

I’m in and would be interested in joining anyone headed west on WOD afterwards. Looking forward to being more than a forum lurker this year!
