I say we all bring a pocketfull of sand, and pour it out on the west side of the path/ice… in time it will build up to something that is passable. My bike sank half-way down in the mud this morning before I was rescued by a penguin!

Have been in touch with Gabe. There is a currently dormant “Inter-Agency Task Force on Bicycling and Active Transportation.”

So in another thread I am mentioning that we are working on Bike Racks. The problem is, I am recreating a wheel that has been researched multiple times before -> what are the best bike racks for our needs in a federal agency. It would be nice to have a mechanism where federal bicycle coordinators could coordinate work, and approach agencies would some mature and researched ideas.

For instance, up to about two weeks ago, I had no idea that there was an “Inter-Agency Task Force on Bicycling and Active Transportation” Wondering how we could change this, and whether there are other cyclists working with their agencies that have similar concerns.

DC, Arlington, and Alexandria all use the U rack as the standard for a reason.

Right. I am looking for the reason. I need to be able to make a better argument than: use Inverted U’s cause, well, everyone else does. Does anyone have specific cost/capacity analysis that justifies inverted U’s over undulating or anything else (again, we had no problem killing off the wheel benders – but I have to respond to the limited space / limited funding argument).

At WMATA too, the inverted-U rack is now our gold standard

Is there an analysis from WMATA, or Arlington, or Alexandria available that does the research and makes the argument as to why this is the right choice.

    Thanks

We have been successfully working with our management about getting new bike racks.

We have reviewed the APBP recommendation on racks – and I have seen lots of places requiring or using the inverted U racks.

The APBP recommendations have some general statements about the racks like “cost: low” and comments about space efficiency. The APBP is specific that wheel benders are not recommended.

So if we have successfully reached the point were wheel benders are out, but management still says “space for parking is limited, as is funding” – is there somewhere a side-by-side comparison of different rack types comparing costs, space efficiency, etc? Or to say it another way, everyone has limited space and funds, yet I see so many people go with the top choice: the Inverted U. Where is the evidence / support for that decision that the U is the right choice (again, I know its the APBP top pick, but if space and funds are limited, how do I make the argument).

    Thanks

Yeah, I think I know that display. If so, that’s the neighborhood that has some over the top displays.

I am interested in Door #1 or Door #3. At my age, a death ride is pretty much just my normal ride home ;)

Sometimes there are some nice houses in N Arlington, near 66 and Glebe Rd. That would make utilizing the Custis Trail as a link possible. I will try to pay attention and see what lights are shining this year.

    I am relieved to see

“Dim flashing lights for the trails”

Been blinded by too many strobing ultrabrights along the trails. Flashing between so bright cant see anything else but the light – to light off and now I cant see anything in the dark.

To have fewer people on the trail this morning, I would have had to get off the trail myself.

Sorry…. you must have your facts wrong. This is “Bike Friendly Arlington.”

Sometimes I wonder if the Arlington Police Department is even a part of the Arlington County Government – they so often seem so entirely not on the same page.

I am thankful for my adopted dogs… and for getting lost on long hikes with them in the woods.

I am damn thankful for my job…. and while I am at it, I am thankful that my employer does such a good job supporting cyclists.

I am thankful for the new bike paths (Hump Back Bridge)… and that my commute is 80% on path and not on the road. (I am displeased, dissatisfied, joyless, sad, unhappy, unpleased, unsatisfied that the Lynn St crossing of Custis Trail continues to be an experience of Russian Roulette).

I am glad DDOT isnt tracking my every move as a cyclist :p

Here is the response which I received:

This project only addresses the quarter-mile segment of Maine Avenue from the Bridge to 12th Street on the south side of Maine Avenue. This contractor’s was task was to replace the existing 4-foot-wide sidewalk with a new 14-foot-wide trail, accommodating both bicyclists and pedestrians, and to replace the existing road surface. Installation of new storm water drainage elements, bio-retention areas, trees, lighting, signs, curb, gutter and fencing are also included in the project.

The sidewalk on the south side of Maine Avenue SW will remain closed until the project is complete (for approximately 3 weeks) and signs are currently in place to detour pedestrians to the north side of Maine Avenue SW between 14th Street and 9th Street SW, with the Fish Market accessible only from the 9th Street area.

The actual crossings of Maine Avenue aren’t a apart of this project, but the development plans of PN Hoffman may have these facilities addressed. I’ll research and get back to you.

Thanks for your inquiry, as I anticipate that the new sidewalk facility will be a safe and pleasant mode for bicyclists and pedestrians to utilize for travels throughout the corridor.

    Best Regards,

    Joe

Has anyone seen plans for this. I am specifically wondering if there will be a way to get across Maine Ave. Currently cyclists in SW on Maine and 12th Street, come up Maine to Treasury, and then have to cross Maine to get to the Jefferson to the 14th St bridge. The crossing of Maine Ave is harrowing, and I know I have seen reports of people getting hit. Anyone know if they are solving this problem as a part of this project?

My commute is 7 miles, including the Custis Trail Arlington hill. Long enough thank you.

My Friday treat is to go home the long way from SW Wash DC up the W&OD and then loop back around to N Arlington. I think that doubles the ride. Gotta say, love biking the W&OD. Particularly this Fall!!!! (And no grinding Arlington Hill)

I had to drive in today in order to do a favor for a friend. I let the friend know that it was a *really* big favor. UGA! How do people do that every day? I mean really. Why dont they take the subway or VRE or anything other than sitting in those damn tin cans on the 14th St bridge????

I hate every day I have to drive my car in – and fortunately that has become very rare.
