Being a tad bit worried about my knees, particularly with the new clipless lacking good float, I was pleased to see the following recommendation from a site discussing cycling knee problems: “avoid excessive hill work”

Woo Hoo! No more hills…. wait…. Custis Trail. 😡 Do you think we could get ArlCo to finally implement the Arl BAC recommendation to bulldoze and level the big Custis Trail hill? That or maybe we could get like a chairlift type thing, only for bikes (I think its called “a bus”)

    “Passing through the MIDDLE???”.

I checking by NOVA Cycling guide book and there is no such official signal. On page 52, as you will see, there are three choices:
    (A) Passing Left (Use of Bell appropriate)
    (B) PASSING RIGHT!!!!!!! (used as a panicked evasion technique), and
    (C) %@#$@~$# *$&%&% !@# Splitting the Path You !@#% @#@$#^ Dangerous!!! @#@% (&!$#^@

I believe you were referring to option (C). The Doppler effect on (C) is quite pronounced.

Tell that to the ear-bud ninjas.

Yeah, well, that’s why we install cow-catchers on our bicycles!

I love the idea of the cow bell. How about some jingle bells strapped to the bike. Always jingling along the way!

We use to have dog jingle bell collars that we used every December. I wonder if I could still find them in storage.

Startling someone is better than not calling a pass IMHO.

Call further back – not off someone’s shoulder – and you will never startle them.

Are the responsible riders only those out commuting on weekday mornings?

Yeah clueless might be the word. Or, there is a direct correlation to the number of miles you have put down, and calling out passes. Maturity brings awareness that proper pass calling is a safety necessity. Taking a spill bc a poseur fails to call a pass can be a major lesson learned.

I have only ridden the CCT once during the weekend…. WOW! Like Wow! Over on the W&OD, it was weekend traffic as well this weekend – but there was maybe 3 parts per million experience rider and you could see the nods of appreciation for good pass calling.

Jealous much. One day, when my legs will let me. I will have to follow in your tire tracks! Very envious.

So the ride is a big secret…. but are there any clues? How long is the ride? And if the start is a secret, well, is it safe to say it is metro accessible?

If so, the curb cut at the garbage cans (75′ up) is fine and not on a blind corner.

I use this. But it has a danger eastbound and westbound

Eastbound: When you come off Lee Hwy into the parking lot, take a QUICK look at the trail over your left shoulder – but then you *must* look forward for cars in the parking lot. It is a blink corner from the CVS around the bank (well it use to be a bank. Now its a Verizon store. Surprised a starbucks didnt go in there). Once you know you are not going to get hit by a car in the parking lot, you can look at the trail again.

Westbound: Coming down the hill from the spout run overpass, from the giant, you are going to go slightly blind to the bikes behind you, as the trail curves. I look first at about the giant to see if there are bikes behind me, and then get to about the curb cut, and hope no one surprises me. You have to slow WAY DOWN to take the curb cut (otherwise you will plant into a parked car) – and will be much slowing than traffic on the trail.

Then I swing wide east, to take a sloping right curve to the curb cut to the Lee Hwy sidewalk, knowing that there is always sand there – knowing that I am going to freak some cars in the road who arent sure what I am doing.

And no bugs going home – you were right Brendan. What a pleasant surprise.

I don know. That second high protein meal on the trail was most welcome (Ppthhhhhhhhh!)

Now if you start going over to the dark side…..

    Resistance is futile.

Essential equipment? Weather radar! Shoot the gaps in the storms! (look like the good employee working extra hours, earning credit hours, all while waiting for that red line of clouds to cross over the potomac)

Like that IKEA idea. I spend way too much time in the morning fussing. Need to figur out some way of getting out the door fast (without checking the tires, oiling the chain, deciding which glasses to wear, putting on the right shoes, checking to see if there is water in the bottle, packing the bag, adjusting the seat height, adjusting the shoe clear…..)

If you see an old geezer waddling up the sidewalk on Lee Hwy, that’s me

I welcome suggestions (especially if they help me avoid the TR bridge).

Sure! Memorial or 14th St Bridge -> MVT SB -> 4 Mile Run West / W&OD West -> Turn East on Custis Trail in Bluemont -> Follow to Cherrydale.

Probably more than twice the distance…. but then you are trying to pound miles for NBC right?

Welcome to Cherrydale! When are we having a happy hour at Subway?? Pasha Cafe has outdoor seating… for the sweaty and stinky.
