ParticipantAfter pricing things out, I am still planning to get a dynamo hub, a cheaper one, and a light that is not crazy expensive, a Herman’s H-One. This setup is going to go on my commute only bike, so I will not be too concerned about weight or higher speed vibration problems. I want it cheap enough I will not have to worry about theft. Not saying being cheap will keep it from being stolen, just if it is stolen it is less of a loss.
What I want out of the dynamo powered light is a a see me type without blinding or annoying on-coming bikes. Plan to mount it around 30″ high on the fork or front rack. After the install, I hope I never have to think about the hub, headlight or rear flasher much this winter. Will still use my L&M Urban units for me to see and batter powered flashers to augment the rear.

Maybe, but this was in Old Town Alexandria.

ParticipantI am trying to not feel hopeless this type of parking behavior can be changed. I hope tickets, chiding, message campaigns will help.
I think one protest idea sounds great at first, but would probably backfire and make people more anti-bike. Hold a bicycle flash mob protest until the vehicle is moved. Have bicycles and riders cluster and block the adjacent travel lane until the parking vehicle is moved. Keep on the message that until the lane is clear, the bicycles riders have no other way to traverse that section of road and must wait until the lane is clear. Of course, I do not believe that latter part, I often ride in the main travel lanes on roads with bicycle lanes due to a number of factors.

Didn’t they close the gates during the last shutdown?
Ah ha, I do not know. That would change things. During the last shutdown I was riding at Patapsco state park most days and have no memory of riding by that place.

Because riding in circles in an empty parking lot is oh so dangerous…
Please check my post for a recent edit. However, please tell me when that parking lot is empty? I have ridden by it in just about every hour of the the day and there is always been people there. Between plane watchers, boat launch users, trail users, and bathroom using cab drivers, it seems always busy.

The C&O was technically closed during the last shutdown…all port-a-pottys were closed with steel bands (other than a couple the locals had cut open north of Hancock), and the well heads had their handles removed. You could still use a bit of muscle to get the pumps to work, but a few were very tough to get flowing…really a two person job. There were also the occasional ranger, but one could maneuver around where the were patrolling/wait till dark.
That being said, I don’t think there will be a shutdown.
Reading this makes me worry, lack of water and pooping choices would be a bad damper on such a trip.
Might just drive up to PA and camp in a State Park and ride in their State Forests.

We need to have an honest-to-goodness Gravelly Point Crit this time. It would have to be a little outlaw, but the USPP weren’t patrolling the park at all last time.

Didn’t this fine publication go by the name of “The Journal of Irreproducible Results?” They probably had to change the name to distinguish themselves from typical academic journals.
I prefer the “Journal of Lead Author Has Enough Previous Publications so We Do Not Review the Work nor Check for Plagiarism”

You ended my fickleness about just sticking with battery lights with this line.

ParticipantI have got close to a choice. I am going to get a Shimano hub, one of the ones Peter White says are close to the Schmidt’s efficiency. I am dropping the thru-axel idea, as it is not worth the extra $120 for a thing I might use.
I do plan to build it up myself, I have a Deldago Cross rim sitting around that will be a good match. Will allow it to be rim or disc brake and just about any tire from 25c to 2.25″
Next I will start thinking about a headlamp and taillight combo for the winter commuter hybrid bike this rim will go on to.

Is anyone running a set up that in addition to lights allows you to charge cell phones, GPS units, etc?
That is something I wish to do as well. It seems many end up buying various modules that regulate and modulate the power. I was surprised by how much these cost, like $200 or so.
