    Group Ride?

Hey team 17! I don’t know if anyone really checks this forum regularly. I usually don’t. Anyways, it looks like this coming Saturday could be “nicer” weather. Maybe it would be a good day for a group ride? I see there are a few folks who ride the CCT and a few who ride the loop through Arlington. I am probably the outliner way up here in Maryland. But I have done a few rides on the CCT and some trails out to Mount Vernon as well. Maybe a meet up in Georgetown (under whites bridge or something) would be a good compromise on a location to meet up? I am new to biking so I don’t think I would be the best person to plan a route but I just wanted to throw the idea out and say that I’m game if anyone else is.

Last year I thought we could look at the leader board and see where we as individuals were placed within the competition. I am not seeing that option this year. You can sort for miles ridden under the People tab, but I don’t see that option under Leaderboards. Am I missing this option somewhere? Was this scoring matrix pulled from the competition this year?

If you go to the freezing saddles standings there is a drop down menu in the upper right corner (menu icon). You can select different options under team or individual leaderboards. I think this is where you would see your individual standing.

Don’t know how exactly, but I assume it is automated based on the number of posts you make. Mine kept changing the more posts I made.

How about a rhyming scheme like…..

    Mean green seventeen
    Fun machine seventeen
    Or…..
Seventeen bottles of beer on the wall

    Hey all,

I’m Rachel C (same on forum and Strava). I’m a total newbie! I just started biking this summer. I love it. I even did a century ride. I’m happy I got on a team despite being late to register. I mostly ride in the Germantown/Gaithersburg area but work in Virginia. I do travel a bit but I plan on carrying my weight on days I’m home and I’ll log miles on the road when possible.

I’m looking forward to the fun!

So I see all the posts for different teams, but where do I go to find out what team I am on? I wasn’t able to make happy hour.

I know this is a repeated topic, but I want to hear from fellow FS riders facing these harsh early winter temps.

Last year was my first year with FS, and I was kind of let down by the few days we had with truly below freezing days.

This year, we’re plunging right in with the sub freezing temps. I’ve been struggling in keeping my feet warm. I’ve tried various thickness wool socks. I’ve tried wearing a thin pair of socks under a looser pair of wool socks. I keep the Velcro straps on my shoes loose so as not to constrict my blood flow. I wear neoprene shoe covers to try to keep the wind out. I wear wool leg warmers to keep my legs warm. But I still finish my rides with ice toes.

I just don’t know where else to go aside from dropping a few hundred bucks on a pair of winter cycling shoes.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I feel your pain. My toes are very susceptible to the cold. So I ordered some winter cycling shoes, but in the meantime here’s what I do…

    1. I put small toe warmers/hot hands under the arch of my foot (outside sock but inside shoe).

    2. I add an extra layer of wind block by placing plastic sandwich bags over the toe of my shoe before I put the full over boot on. I have to tear the plastic and pull around the cleat.

    3. I stop for re-warming breaks every 45 min or so.

I’m a newbie so I am still trying different things out. Good luck.

I think we ended up getting all of the late registrants on a team last year so hopefully we’ll be able to fit you in. If you rode 22 miles on a day like today then you’ll do great in Freezing Saddles.

Good to hear. Fingers crossed I can slide in somewhere.

I followed the steps to register even though it stated registration was closed. I am fairly new to cycling (6 months), but I put in 22 miles today. Soooooo cold.

I am looking forward to participating if I am not too late.

I will be out in the cold regardless.

Hey! I just discovered this forum and this whole “freezing saddles” thing. I rode 22 miles today and I am still frozen. So anyway goals for 2018….

    1. Complete two century rides.

    2. Complete 5K miles for the year.

    3. Get faster! I have only been biking since the summer, but I am hoping to get fast enough to consistently reach a 17 mph pace on longer rides.

Happy New Year to everyone. I am so glad I “discovered” cycling. I wish I had started years ago.
