If you’re gonna act like a total asshat on an e-bike, maybe you shouldn’t strava it. Or, put “turbo” in your profile name.

F*** that guy. My arch nemesis.

Yeah, just saying he hit the intersection at W&OD and little falls at 30.3mph (exactly) without stopping and nearly got hit by a car. You can see it on that strava link dcv posted. Watched him almost get flattened and he pissed off a walker in the process. I’ve seen him ride like a moron before but finally but witnessed that one and was able to find him on strava flyby. Anyway That guy sucks.

No worries. I was curious to see exactly how “bad” the ride was (was he really going 30 mph or did people just think he was going 30 mph?), so I checked out the data to see what I could decipher. It doesn’t appear to be out of the ordinary compared to fitter cyclists, but to me it falls into the “you might be going too fast for the trail you’re on” category that many pathletes also occupy.

Sorry, realized you can hit “analysis” and check the speeds. He hit Little Falls Rd Intersection at 30.3mph, slowed down to 28 on the other side. You can see similar on other intersections too.

I did some quick analysis of his average and max speed on this ride from Oakton to NW DC (I removed the weird Strava speed spikes due to GPS to ensure accuracy):

    • Oakton roads to W&OD Trail
      • Average: 16.0 mph – Max: 33.8 mph
    • W&OD Trail (Vienna to W&OD/Custis)
      • Average: 21.4 mph – Max: 29.1 mph
    • Custis Trail (W&OD to Rosslyn)
      • Average: 20.2 mph – Max: 32.0 mph
    • Remainder (MVT, Roosevelt Bridge, NW DC roads)
      • Average: 17.1 mph – Max: 27.1 mph

I’ll let others reach their own conclusions based on the data presented.

I think it’s this guy, I’ve seen him ride in the oncoming lane to get around cars waiting / taking turns at a stop sign – and blow through the intersection without stopping. https://www.strava.com/activities/858250611

Also seen him ride into oncoming traffic in Oakton on a few occasions. Saw this guy almost hit a pedestrian with a dog while getting honked at by a passing car at little falls rd and w&od on Tuesday, I would guess he hit the intersection at around 25mph or so. Guy is absolutely insane. Also logs e-bike rides on strava so he’s racking up KOMs, etc.

Bummer Jermantown Road is being paved currently but not on the list. It’s on the 2018 bike lane schedule, too.

It’s the only route across 66 for us fairfax city and fairfax corner types and it’s not fun to ride on most of the time.

Three of us did the ride on fixed gear last Saturday, it’s a good route and great training for Kill Bill. The ride is billed as no-drop and there was a sweep, but there was a big gap between the lead and sweep so riders in the middle could easily get lost. I had the route on Garmin, otherwise I think you need to keep the lead group in sight or ride with someone who knows the route. Our gear ratios:

    • 48×17 (74 gi)
    • 46×17 (71 gi) – me
    • 46×18 (67 gi)

74 gi had to walk twice at the two streets that Marc, Will & Shawn warned us about – N. Quebec (steep) and Rock Spring (longer slog with steep ending). The ride .gpx file says it’s 1,600 ft of elevation, but our Strava data recorded just over 2,000 ft over 22 miles.

If you’re fixed on this ride I don’t think it’s the downhills you should worry about, my $0.02.

Whoops, I rode 48-18. Just counted, so I’m 72 GI. I thought I was really close in cadence to DCV. Maxed out my legs on that ride at 31mph.

Those are some big improvements for an area that needs all the help it can get. Jones Branch is treacherous since it’s a essentially a long hill that feeds commuters to Dulles Toll Road w/ 35mph limit. Bravo to Fairfax County.
