I missed out on the fun-in-the-cold this morning. Had a breakfast meeting at the Pentagon so was on the metro – but what a disaster that was! Wish I’d been on the bike. For those of you lucky enough to ignore metro goings-on, the deep cold overnight snapped a rail just N of pentagon station. Major delays on blue and yellow and major crowds and little information from the authorities. Then both red and green lines had single tracking for their own reasons on top of it. Looking forward to riding home tonight… cold fingers are better than being a stressed out sardine.

All lights still out, completely black in there. Any update from the responsible officials?

I noticed because last night I became a honorary Ninja due to an unexpectedly drained battery. My apologies to any of you I enountered on the W&OD or 4 mile run trail. I was ringing my bell like mad hoping to be audible since I was invisible… Time to start carrying a backup light.

Sounds like it might be the Spoke-lit from Nitize. They have a few solid colors and one ‘Disc-o’ that changes colors.

a few other cool LED options on there too.

    Yes that’s it. Thanks!

I made the suggestion that the protesters march on Ballston Common Mall instead, for being such a lousy use of a great location. But that idea didn’t go over very well.

Ha! You ignore the great & glorious history of that mall, originally called Parkington and a major milestone in the development of the car-oriented shopping mall when it opened in 1951. “Parkington was the first U.S. shopping center built around a multi-story parking garage.” “was believed to have the largest parking garage in the United States when it opened.”

Perhaps the cycling community should march on it (roll on it??) and perform an exorcism.

I ride with a 350 lumen handlebar-mounted niterider on steady, even on the trail. I’m pretty new to trail commuting – looking forward to having forum members tell me “you’re doing it wrong!”

The worst part of my commute home is the W&OD trail eastward along South Four Mile Run drive (Columbia Pike to Shirlington). The headlights of the oncoming cars just feet to the right are strong enough that I really can’t see unlit unreflective cyclists and pedestrians until I’m almost on them. Don’t know if my light helps at all with that or if it just blinds others on the trail – thoughts?

I have forwarded the above exchange to the two contact email addresses for W&OD trail (listed in the sticky threads under report a trail problem) asking them to notify the proper authorities.

Went under 395 this morning on the four mile run trail (just being specific to make sure we’re talking about the same place). It was pitch black.

Pete- Awesome, that ridewidthgps cue sheet is very helpful!

As for the automobile drivers – just moved here from Boston where I cycled to MIT and back through Cambridge traffic. What I’ve seen so far here in Arlington/Alexandria has been much easier to cope with. It helps that I’m on the trails for 75% of the ride. As we get closer to winter I’ll be asking the Forum what routes are good in the snow/ice season. For now the trails are great.

I just arrived in the area a couple weeks ago. Been commuting along four mile run. This morning I snuck through the 395 underpass and it was fine. In case things are worse this afternoon: How do I find the detour “through Shirlington over the I-395 bridge”. I’ll be coming down the WO&D (from Ballston).

    Thanks,
    John

I took the old route from Shirlington over the I-395 bridge this morning because I was expecting a lot of mud under I-395 and especially W Glebe. They weren’t horrible last night at 5:30, but the water was just rising then.
