ParticipantIf you’d looked behind you after taking the photo you would have seen the station was temporarily placed about 80′ behind you on Mass Ave. It’s now back on that permeable pavement though.

ParticipantFactories, large warehouses and movie lots have been using fleets bikes (and often trikes) to get around for years. These are just fleet bike systems that are being re-branded as ‘bike share’ because it’s a trendy new term. IMO if these systems aren’t open to the general public (and in an area accessible by the general public) then they aren’t really getting the ‘share’ part of bike share.

ParticipantYou either stopped or you didn’t. I blow multiple red lights and stop signs every day to and from work during my 16+ mile commute, but I never do it if there’s a police officer or police vehicle present. It’s just disrespectful. Trying to divert the argument to violations committed by bus drivers is simply juvenile. Best lecture I got from a police officer when I was pulled over for speeding in a car and pulled the bs line of “well everyone else was speeding too”. Officer asked if I ever went fishing. I answered, “yes”. He responded with, “ever catch all the fish?”.

ParticipantOne thing to note is that pre-bottled liquid Gatorade has high-fructose corn syrup [HFCS] in it, while the powdered type you can buy in grocery stores & mix yourself does not have HFCS. Some people have bad reactions to large quantities of HFCS, and this may be what you’re experiencing. Another benefit of the powdered type is that you can make it in a lower ratio than recommended, which I like because I find bottled Gatorade cloyingly sweet/sugary.

ParticipantI’ve seen several cars on the Capital Crescent Trail over the past few weeks. I caught up to and spoke with all of them and each one said they simply drove around the bollard at the trailhead under the Whitehurst Freeway, thinking it was a road. There is only a signs that says ‘No Outlet’ and the railroad ties on one side of the bollard are spaced so far apart that cars can easily drive around [as evident by the tire tracks]. I called Park Police each time [good number to have in your cell phone: 202-619-7300] and the dispatcher claimed they were sending an officer out. Perhaps a sign that said ‘no cars’ or ‘non-motorized traffic only’ would help, but to be honest the individuals I spoke with who drove on the trail were definitely not the smartest folks I’ve met.

ParticipantThis is the only product I’ve tried that really re-waterproof Gore-Tex and other claimed waterproof/breathable fabrics:

I tried the whole NikWax process of wash & spray with poor results, but the Kiwi stuff did the trick and has been holding up well for the past 9 months since I did it to my older [5+ years] Cannondale rain jacket. The spray may have reduced some of the jacket’s breathability, but not much. In the end it’s a tradeoff I was willing to make.

ParticipantMight be a MPD training division ride. The certification process to become a ‘Mountain Bike Officer’ is actually pretty intense [or at least used to be]. 25+ mile rides from the academy in Blue Plains aren’t uncommon. This could have been one of those rides. The tailing SUV could have have hydration, food, medical supplies [an officer died of a medical condition on one of these rides several years ago]. Not saying this instance couldn’t have been something foolish, but it could have just been training to get cops out of cars and onto bikes, which in the long run is a good thing in my opinion.

ParticipantIs that a suspension/shock seatpost? If so, what model & how do you like it? Great looking bike.

ParticipantJust out of curiosity – what was MPD’s response like? You did report this right?

ParticipantAnother good thing to check are the tires. Even though they may have a decent amount to tread left, inspect the sidewalls for splits/cracks. Age will break down tires just as badly as usage/road wear, and can cost more than you think to replace.
