ParticipantGarmin 800 is what I use. To this day, my wife doesn’t know about the price of that thing. Shhhh. It was the “bundle” purchase and It’s still a “bundle” of joy using it. So Garmin is what I recommend.

ParticipantFormer 83 280ZX owner and Nissan tech here. I was already into 2 wheels when I bought that car back in the day. Sure was hard putting rollers in the back of that thing come race day. Ttops were nice.

ParticipantI saw the Stars & Stripes fairing last year.

ParticipantI think for bigger kids, bicycle manufacturers should modernize the Rickshaw. Runflat tires, GPS, Leather seats and of course good dependable 3 wheel disc brakes. Gotta stop that thing somehow. Esp with a full load. Or maybe add on an electric motor just in case the pilot bonks.

ParticipantKeep it up Subby. It’ll just get better and easier as the miles accumulate.

Oh it has a 1200 lumen flash mode for on the road. You can see it reflecting off street signs 4 blocks away in daylight
When there is a ninja, I don’t kick it down to low beam. Sorry I’m blinding you, but you’re invisible otherwise. Get a light and I promise I will stop shining this in your face.

ParticipantIt was Deer country just before 2012 because it was breeding season according to WTOP.

ParticipantThey don’t work. At least our Collision Center personnel says so.

This, word for word. If there’s no lighting other than what’s there with me, I still need to be able to see the surface in front of me at 15-20mph. That means a high-zoot light. I don’t ride through deer country… I might mount a couple of those deer whistles on my helmet if I did. Wonder if they really help…

ParticipantHey, by all means keep it on full burn when riding on open road with vehicular traffic around you. There’s a stretch on the WOD that’s pretty dark (between Gallows Rd and Church St.) that I keep my light on full blast plus I keep it high for Deer but this one evening some jogger just popped out of nowhere and he said, shadowing his eye balls from my light, “That’s ridiculous”. I said “Put a reflective vest on you clown”. So in some situations it is necessary to keep it high. Common sense of course comes into play.

So I guess my 1200 lumen main deflector array is excessive? I have low beams that I use with oncoming traffic. On high, the 1200 lumen deer vaporizer is on and I can like a mile down the trail. When there is oncoming cyclist traffic, I flick the switch to low beams. There are smaller LED’s aimed down that come on lighting directly in front of me and not blinding anyone.

ParticipantIf it is true then CCrew is Super Human but I dunno. I’m still skeptical.

I still don’t understand how you survive your daily schedule and sustain your daily mileage. You are an enigma.

ParticipantI’ve noticed a lot of riders doing that. (shielding the beam with their hand) I leave the clamp semi loose so I could pitch it down at a moments notice.

Mine is about 550 lumens and I feel like I wouldn’t want any less in full darkness. It has no beam cutoff to speak of though, and I have to shield it with my hand when I pass folks coming the other way. If I had a proper cutoff like an automotive projector lamp I don’t see why you couldn’t go through the roof with brightness.
Hmmm…. weekend project – retrofit auto-leveling HID headlight to bike.

I was poking around in our automated counters backend system and came up with a pretty cool stat! Since automated counters were installed in Rosslyn along the Custis Trail back in October 2009, more than 1 million bike and pedestrian trips have been recorded!
Here’s the graph:

I just rode home from Court House to West Falls Church (Custis to W&OD). It’s a ton better than this morning and most of the stuff that’s still on bridges is slushy. You’d be fine on a mountain bike and okay on a road bike if you don’t mind walking in a couple of areas.
I still think I’ll use the studded ride tomorrow b/c what’s left will freeze tonight.

ParticipantAnybody know what the conditions are after the Falls Church Metro (Custis to 4MR) look like? Thanks in advance.

ParticipantI too love my car but I also love it when I know I’ve saved some gas by riding to work. Sure it’s cold but that’s only for the first 3 minutes.
