My goals for this year were:

    Compete in a MTB race
Get a gold metal in the Crystal City Challenge
    Complete a Century ride
Log 2000 miles total for the year.

    Results to date

I placed 5th in my first MTB relay race
I got my gold medal in Crystal City Challenge (Shockingly faster time than I thought I was going to have Hello drafting!)
I have not completed my century ride, I have maxed out at 56 miles in one ride
I reached the 1018 mile mark this weekend so I am on pace for my 2000 mile year.

    Updated goals
I want to do more competition type riding. Now I just have to find out what those competitions will be.

I will take Curtis over MVT any day of the week.

I live in Crystal City right next to the Pedestrian tunnel so I take MVT every day to get to anywhere I want to ride. It is such a mess especially if you want to head north to Curtis or Georgetown passing through Gravely point. Strava has now within the last week marked Gravely point ha sto hazardous. The problem with the MUPs in this area is people do not have any level of mutual respect for each other. Families let their kids run all over the paths, Runners do not pay attention to others or have both headphones in and turned up so loud that you can hear what they are listening to when you pass. Running groups take up both lanes. Tourists walk on the wrong side of the path because they are used to their country. Cyclists do not slow down at times where we really should slow down. If everybody just paid a bit more attention and thought of others it would be fine.

With all that said I am extremely grateful we have the MUP system we have. It is amazing to go and ride for miles on end without having to worry about a car hitting me from behind while the driver is testing. I have a much better chance walking away from an impact with a runner than I do with a car.

I have been looking forward to this event all year, Than I ran into the organizers at the hotel bar the night before Crystal City Challenge. Talking to them (mind you pretty cool guys in general) got me even more pumped for it. I ran home to tell the wife about it and low and behold she reminds me that her old roommates wedding is that day in Richmond VA. So I guess i try for next years race.

I know of some back routes out to Ft Hunt (near Mt Vernon) that you can take to avoid the MVT. Makes a nice change from the trail.

Im all about that. MVT gets a bit crowded starting at around 10am on the weekends. I nearly hit some unattended kid every time I’m on that trail.

Happy Hour will be at CIRCA in Foggy Bottom!

Thank you all. I will try to make it out to the HH on the 20th.

I have gotten to know the trails fairly well around the area. I ride MT. Vernon all the time and take the to Curtis Trail and out to WO&d. Not a huge fan of Four Mile because of all the stops. Hains point is another favorite of mine because I can really work on cadence drills and sprint drills not to mention Hains point seems to always supply the wind in one direction for me as a training partner.

I’ll look into the 50 state challenge today.

I plan on taking part in some of the Sunday morning rides out of Revolution Cycles in George town along with some of the DCpaceline meets at hains point.

I live right on Crystal Drive at 18th street. Crystal City Challenge was one of the factors that got me into cycling last year. As soon as we left the start and head down CD and I saw there were no dividers between lanes I new it could cause problems. On lap 5 I set up on the outside of the right turn off of 15 onto CD and called out my line. The guy in the middle decided to run wide pushing me over the yellow into on coming traffic. Fortunately the group coming at me was moving right to set up for their left turn. I think the course would be fine if the just put barriers on the yellow line the length of CD

Yes they close down Crystal Drive a lot during the summer for any number of events. It is normally not an issues as you can get to my building from an access road. (that was not the case this year for the 5ks which I pitched a bitch about) I do not care that you block my entrance on Crystal drive. However it is a major problem when you block both my routes out of my building for hours on end. The closing of the road is just something you get used to and is all part of city living as far as I am concerned.
