ParticipantMelamine foam is technically an abrasive, so it may have the effect of scratching the paint or other components depending on their hardness. I’ve never tested it personally.

ParticipantProrack 4-Bike Hitch Carrier is going for just under $27 on amazon. Note that this does not fold down…buy hey, for under $30 it’s worth a shot. For those that don’t know Prorack is a “value” brand of Yakima.

Amazon has a set of Race Face Turbine wheels used for $287. Looks like they come with caps so you can run them with QRs as well.

How good are these? Are they $180-200 good or $50 good (with a $180 “real” price tag as an enticement)?
I am a sucker for bags and packs but I really don’t need anything right now. However if this were an amazing $200 pack for $50 I might be persuaded to get one. You know, for a friend!
It’s probably a $150 pack…at least in my mind. No loose threads, definitely waterproof inside, and feels good on my back in all weather. Made in Seattle, they claim a lifetime warranty (though no problems on mine to date…even after a couple crashes).

ParticipantAmazon has some decent pricing on the Velo Transit Freemont 30 pack…these are usually $180-200, some colors currently going for under $50. I have a 40 liter pack of theirs and it has held up well over the last year. Definitely waterproof on the inside…outside pocket not so much.

wow that’s scary! Were you able to stay around and provide a witness statement to the police? I’m glad to hear you and the jogger are ok, and hopefully the civic driver is too.
Yes, I stuck around and provided a statement. A guy in a car (also a biker I found out) who saw it all from behind was also kind enough to hang around to give a statement.

ParticipantPretty close one this morning.
Waiting for the light at Williamsburg and Old Dominion headed east on Williamsburg towards Chain Bridge. The light changed and myself, a jogger, and a car (Civic) proceeded on green. Next thing I know a car (CRV) is coming from the left on Old Dominion through the red light at full speed.
I manage to be slightly ahead of the Civic (and by slightly I mean a foot), which turned out to be a good thing as the CRV slammed into the side of the Civic, pushing it across the road (through the space that I had just been occupying) such that the front passenger corner was in the crosswalk where the jogger had just passed (she also managed to clear the intersection).
The Civic driver was pretty shaken up, with pain on the left side of her body where the CRV had slammed into her (her side curtain airbags and front airbag had deployed).
It was a good day not to fumble the clip in.

Agreed, a lot of these new materials sound fantastic, but turn out to have fairly limited applications. My buddy in forestry keeps raving about nanocellulose.
Nanocellulose is a material type that has many potential applications…this is a material structure/new manufacturing process, so perhaps a bit more limited in application.
I wonder if your friend’s name is Michael…

ParticipantMy “compromise” tires right now are a pair of Conti Tour Rides or something like that. They claim to be 37c, but my caliper tells me they’re really 33c at 60 psi. It’s a fairly heavy tire that hasn’t ever flatted on me, and have had no issue riding roads, the GAP/canal down from Pitt, and some singletrack.
Once these wear out (which will likely be a while) I’m looking at Schwalbe Marathon Racers (28c).

Yeah, if the derailleur is properly adjusted then I would probably do what dcv says and try to wind it back together. You could solder the end to hold the strands together or try to squeeze it all into a ferrule. I mentioned the cutters because the dedicated cable cutters are “v-shaped” so they compress the cable as they cut. Typically cables cut with proper/sharp cutters do not fray. At least that is my experience; I still need to remember to put a new ferrule on my FD cable (it fell off), but it has been a couple months and no fraying.
Superglue also works instead of solder. I hit the tips of my cables with the stuff (lightly) to prevent fraying (always loosing caps).

Reading this makes me worry, lack of water and pooping choices would be a bad damper on such a trip.
Might just drive up to PA and camp in a State Park and ride in their State Forests.
It’s not that bad, just requires some extra planning! And maybe some extra water.
