ParticipantYou- riding in the Penn bike lane last night in the dark, rainy night with no lights or reflectors.
Me- lit up like a Christmas tree and unable to see you until I was 5 feet behind you even though you were wearing some type of completely non-helpful “high-vis” jacket that yelled “How about some lights, jack*hole!”
Please, please, please at least get a friggin’ rear reflector. Then at least my 500+ lumens of light would have hit something on you to make you visible. If I am behind you on a bike and can’t even figure out you are there and I am expecting other cyclists, what the hell are the poor drivers that are most certainly not expecting you and not looking ever going to see before they flatten you?

ParticipantThat is awesome! My BF is really excited. He has had to talk industrial places into waterjet laser cutting acrylic for his art projects so the option of trying it himself is definitely worth trying a membership for a month or two. For the past few years he has just done non-credit classes at the Corocran for access to most equipment (they don’t have a waterjet laser cutter though).

To be clear, the purpose of the bell is for politely passing; it should not be considered an emergency warning device. For that, perhaps an airzound?
Just as many bicyclists appear to be using earbuds and/ or phones these days, sadly.
At one point, I thought air horns were specifically prohibited by law on bikes. But the regulation appears to just prohibit sirens. I don’t know where I got that idea from. A loud horn would certainly make my morning far more entertaining

Oh, and everyone should have a bell.
I find the bell a lot less effective on city streets than I do on trails. On the streets, yelling “Hey dumba@@! Pay f—-ing attention!” is much more effective. Especially with the earbud wearing, electronic device staring, federal zombies that ALWAYS walk in front of me on 4th St SW into my right away of way because somehow that crosswalk at 4th & C St SW makes them invincible and the “don’t walk” certainly does not apply to them. They don’t notice bells at all. (No, I am not bitter about this in the least either.)

ParticipantChasing Mailboxes did not make it on to that list.

ParticipantTo the woman that passed me on my right at 15 mph, no call of course, while I was stopped for the red light in the bike lane at Penn & Constitution this morning-
Thanks so much for wearing the neon green safety vest! It made it so much easier to identify and yell at your stupid a$$ when you beat me to the inevitable red light at 6th St.
You, my friend, are a jackhole.

ParticipantThere is a corral across from the gallery on 7th near the movie theater. If you go down 8th toward Penn Quarter, there is a large rack between D & E outside the charter school and another corral at the bottom of 8th before the plaza. Plus, there are miscellaneous racks here and there. It is just as safe, or not, as locking up anywhere else in the city IMO.

ParticipantFor those of you that didn’t make it- we had a police escort that let us run all the red lights from the Boat Center to the Capitol. It was fabulous!!

Public shaming seems to be one of the most effective techniques to get these people to open their eyes. What’s your bosses e-mail address?
While I wasn’t shy about responding in the meeting, I can’t go quite that far…

ParticipantMe: in a bright orange jacket (fashionable DKNY orange, not safety orange, but it will do) entering the sharrowed lane in the 1100 block of L St from the L St bike lane.
You: the jackhole in the truck that felt it was necessary to tap on your horn multiple times behind me.
I really like the way you floored it and aggressively pulled into the middle lane. It got you to that red light an entire 5 seconds faster than me and you ended up behind 2 cars instead of 1. Well done sir!

It’s so infuriating when a perfectly enjoyable ride gets marred by people acting like donkeys.
I think this one is a perfect example of my favorite contraction: jack’hole

ParticipantSpotted Dirt this morning near the Jefferson Memorial headed toward the bridge. His bright pink cast rivaled the sun as a warm, friendly beacon on a chilly morning.
