ParticipantVery old thread now, but Justin if you are still looking for an alternative I have found F to be a good short detour eastbound. 4th St is one way heading south, and it is very low traffic, so I take F from 9th (coming down from G, where there is a bike lane) over to 4th and then down 4th to E, where the road is open again. There is a light at 4th and E, so it’s easy to get back onto E (watch for pedestrians, though).

ParticipantThis is so frustrating, particularly in the Q/R St. bike lanes. I mean, the bike lane going your direction is one block over!
I live on 5th and only go the right way in the lane, but I will say for the salmon that while 5th is a great way to go north, there is no great way to go south in that vicinity. 7th has a bike lane for a little while, but it is completely dangerous with all the commuters weaving in and out of it and it peters out pretty quickly. I generally take 7th down from Florida, go across on Q, and take 1st down. No bike lane on 1st but there is a parking lane southbound (no parking lane northbound). Am I missing an obvious solution?

ParticipantThanks so much for the info, DSalovesh. At least I know what it’s about now!

ParticipantYeah, it’s been blocked for months now. I thought I could wait it out (at first it appeared to be utility work under the road, which would have a time frame of about 6 weeks), but now it’s really starting to get annoying. Even biking westbound in the open lane isn’t safe because it’s too narrow for a bike and a car at the same time. I haul through there as fast as possible so the cars don’t get too impatient and luckily haven’t been nudged by an overeager driver, but I feel like I’m taking my life in my hands every time I do.

ParticipantI’m glad I’m not alone on the OP’s problem! Found the fourth flat in as many months on my back tire this morning, UGH! I’ve had the bike 3 years and the first flat in the series was the first flat period, so this is a weird, new, and annoying problem. I had the bike shop put in an extra rubber strip thingy (I just like to ride bikes, I don’t actually know anything about them) between the tube and the wheel but alas. The bike shop said it had to do with how I was pumping the tire (I have the pump with the flip up lever, which they said was the wrong kind of pump). I was super careful when filling it up not to joggle the valve stem but no dice. I am ready to just buy a new wheel and hope that it’s better.
