Then you’d have a mountain bike.

Current specialized diverge (for example) is spec’d to run up to 47mm in 700c or 53mm in 650b, and isn’t exactly a mountain bike. Road bikes with decent tire clearance are getting a lot easier to find these days (they just like to call them “gravel” or “all road” or somesuch).

25s, that’s mental for that distance. I mean, can be done, sure, but doesn’t seem worth the hassle dodging all the rocks and muck when 33s will go right over and through them.

I think the same about 33s vs 38s :D If I had clearance for 48s I’d probably feel the same way about them.

those are very coherent and well considered comments. based on my experience with vdot, they will proceed with doing what they want, and when motorists complain about the lower speed limit after they project is complete they’ll do a quick study that finds it necessary to raise the limit based on the 85th percentile speed. the fact that they can pick a preferred option with pedestrian and cyclist safety noted as something to think about later pretty much says it all.

Yesterday I rode by there for the first time in weeks. The surface of the now closed bridge looks as it has since late May — the damage doesn’t seem any worse, they’ve just closed the bridge, forcing us to use the marsh route, which unfortunately is unlit and feels more cramped than it sometimes does because of foliage overhanging the trail. Anyhow, I wonder why the City closed the bridge entirely after two months of merely keeping people away from the damage. Does anybody know?

I’d guess an engineer looked at it and freaked.

Well, the bollard didn’t do its job. Just after the trail was finished, a contractor drove his truck on the permeable surface. A section of the trail had to be reinstalled to repair the damage

Maybe instead of the useless bollard, they should try better signage. I know, crazy.

for some reason it’s harder than it should be to find cycling shoes that don’t have narrow pointy toes

Prince William Forest Park is another great choice that would be close to your 40 mile criterion. I’ve spent a lot of time down there and I like that park. However, probably wouldn’t have the most bike-friendly route down there, but it’s doable.

It’s actually not too bad if you take the fire road off Dumfries, crossing the Occoquan either at Occoquan (foot bridge to Tanyard Hill Rd–they’re not kidding, btw) or for a more epic ride, out around Manassas. Def wouldn’t go anywhere near 123/95/1/Woodbridge. All of these have a much more “suburban commuter” feel than the towpath. Biggest issue right now is that campsites everywhere are pretty full.

I found that the trails got really crowded with new walkers, and the roads in the suburbs/rural areas got a lot more dangerous as cars were really speeding since drivers just saw empty pavement; that made riding somewhat unappealing. Things are pretty much back to normal, with congestion everywhere and all the new people on the trails back to whatever they were doing before.

But the chicken (or the egg) is progressing (or something like that; metaphors schmetaphors). There are a lot more people on bikes than there used to be, and I find that many drivers are accommodating. Not 100% by any means, but my personal observation is that it’s much better now than, say, 1999…or 2009.

yes and no; it’s very place-dependent. if you’re in an place where vdot has built stroads to “upgrade” smaller roads or even dirt roads that existed 20 years ago things have gotten much, much worse. there’s probably at least another 15 years of loudoun & pwc getting worse already baked into long term plans (apart from very focused higher density development areas).
