My ortleibs have a thin internal pocket, which can help with really small items.

In general, there are two pannier camps: the waterproof camp and the rain cover camp. The rain cover camp argues that it’s easier/cheaper to replace a torn cover than a torn pannier, and that waterproof bags get funkier than breathable bags. The other camp just wants something that’s waterproof. Touring, I generally split the difference, with waterproof bags for stuff I really want to keep dry, and breathable bags for everything else. Commuting, I use a breathable bag. I’m not going to be out in the rain for hours like I would touring, and if anything gets wet I wouldn’t care much anyway (I don’t carry a laptop). If you can keep your bag empty most of the day, the swamp bag argument won’t much matter. If you leave your bike clothes in the bag during the day, I definitely wouldn’t get a waterproof one. If your main concern is a laptop, you could get a separate dry bag for it.

Is there a reason to attach the rack to the skewer rather than the frame?

    1) I don’t think helmets are designed to protect against that.

    2) I wonder what “ran over his head” actually means. I find it somewhat hard to imagine the dump truck’s tire lifting 8-10 inches in the air as it literally rolls over the head + helmet. (I’d expect the more likely outcome to be the head+helmet wedging into the tire and being smeared on the ground.) Maybe it just grazed the side?

While I’m sure people injure their genitals with bikes in other ways, I don’t buy the theory that biking = less fertility. My husband’s relatively small (~30 guys) bike team has fathered 10 kids in the last two years.

Note to carefree single guys: this is not the team for you.

I’m pretty sure you should “just say no” to skin tinsel.

The raleigh looks like another interesting choice. I ended up going for the specialized street (sight unseen) just a couple of days ago. I’ll report after Christmas how it works out in practice.

There is a recognized right to privacy, but it doesn’t apply where a reasonable person would not have an expectation of privacy. (Like the middle of a public street.) If you were to take off your helmet and hold it up over a privacy fence to film somebody sunbathing, then they’d have grounds to claim you were violating their privacy. (Whether there is an associated penalty depends on the jurisdiction.) They could also call you “creepy”.

This is DC. Get a group together with signs that say “Fine Arts Kill” and picket. Choose a slow news day.

Actually yes. That is a pretty chronic problem. Your skewer can be tight enough that the lever doesn’t move, but the axle jiggles in the dropout a tiny bit. The wheel isn’t going to come off, but it moves just enough to make a creaking noise that sounds like your bottom bracket is messed up. I “fix” a few bikes per month as I’m riding along the trail.

There’s a creak, and there’s a rattle. Man says rattle, I’m thinking energetic 6 month old or metal parts flapping in the breeze. :-)

Mounting the disc brake that way can make it easier to mount fenders & rack.
