It’s a problem. I’ve seen several people crash in front of the Quincy hotel. There is a bollard in the middle of the bike lane that breaks a lot and the base stays.
    Send a tweet to @ddotc and @bikepedantic

There is also on on-line form on DC gov’t web site for people who don’t tweet, or have twitter blocked at their jobs. I’ve reporting a number of potholes, and they been fixed with a few days. I’ve never used for bike lane issues.

My guess is that the roads will be open to bikes in morning but not in the afternoon. You will need to loop around the Washington Monument. If you run into any of the security checkpoints were they are searching bags, you will need to find another route.

FYI, pulled the hub apart, re-lubricated it, and it seems to be working fine. I used sewing machine because my LBS did not have a specific oil that they sold for hubs and we had the sewing machine oil around our house. I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to get a wood oil with the right viscosity. Apparently, a lot of shops use Shimano disc brake oil. Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and advice.

My next car will have a tow hitch. Installing one on our Mazda 3 seems a little silly, though.

Also, now that I think about it, one advantage of the roof rack is parking – I had to have my wife get out the other day and help me parallel park with the rack on the back.

I ordered a hitchmount from uhaul for a mazda3 – placing the order online, the total installed cost was under $150. I didn’t bother with an the electric connections because I wasn’t planning to tow anything. You can can a used Thule hitch mount rack thru craigslist for not a lot of money.

Speaking of parking, if you get a roof rack, be careful about going into parking garages.

LQ5 is a good weatherised and filtered mineral oil that works perfectly on the Mavic freewheel hub.

McLean Hardware has it in stock – 4oz bottle for $5.00, but you are welcome to use mine for the few drops it takes to lube the pawls. I’m in McLean.

Thanks for the offer, and thanks to you and Brendan von Buckingham for the information. I’m in Alexandria so I may see what I can get at the LBS or the hardware store, or maybe try Amazon.

The hub is pretty solid, which brings me back to the original question – is drug store mineral oil the same as the bike store stuff? I’m guessing not.

If its making bad/loud noises its likely that the bush and bearing are shot.

Before you tear it down, grab the big sprocket on your cassette and rock it to check for play. If you see movement your hub probably has the chronic Mavic bush wear. They use a nylon bush as the inner bearing, and once enough road frass finds its way past the inner seal that bush wears down. The best solution is to rebuild it with ceramic bearings using this kit – http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HUBDOCTOR-PRO-MAVIC-FREEHUB-REBUILD-KIT-HYBRID-CERAMIC-BEARINGS-/330940493909
I did mine early this season and its been silky smooth ever since. Here’s a bit more info – http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?7034-Rebuilding-Mavic-freehub&p=85786#post85786

After being stumped by the fact that Mavic’s mineral oil and Perdo’s Road Rage mineral oil are both unobtanium, I went hunting. Turns out LQ5 is a good weatherised and filtered lubricant that works perfectly on the Mavic freewheel hub.

Likewise if you are a bit antsy about rebuilding the hub just grab the kit and bring it over to my place. It takes a bit over an hour to do it, and most of that is cleaning parts.

Thanks. I may try the re-lubrication first because I have spent enough on my bike lately.
