Since I call out “passing on your left, thank you!” about 100 times a day when I commute, I find myself doing it in the supermarket when pushing my grocery cart down the crowded aisles.
Same here. Sometimes I want to preface it with “Bing!” because I don’t have my bell.

ParticipantI recently bought a second bike and am in the market for headlight for riding along the MVT at night – so I want a “to see with” light, and not just a “to be seen with” light. I’ve heard conflicting information on how much credence I should give to the claimed lumens rating – for example, a 650 lumen Cygolite may be about $80 or more, but there are lights with a higher claimed lumen rating for a lot less on Amazon. I also need to consider factors such as beam width, battery life (and not blinding oncoming cyclists).

Ok, I know this is a dumb question for some people, but I live in an apartment building and have nowhere to wash my bike. I am not concerned with keeping my ride super clean/pristine, but looking for some place to wash my bike when it gets really dirty and gritty. I figured there must be other people with the same issue. I live in an apartment building with no outside hookups for water that can be used by anyone except maintenance. I am in Arlington and there has to be somewhere where people can go to wash their bikes. Heeeeeeelp!
Make friends with a biker with access to a hose.
I like the Bad Brains avatar, by the way.

No more complaints about road bikes not being able to handle some off-roading and such!

This guy has done at least one more video like this. There is also the Road Bike Party videos although Martyn Ashton managed to mess himself up something serious doing tricks.

Just to note, I have heard Alexandria police claim that in their enforcement campaign on Union Street, they only ticketed cyclists who were egregiously violating stop signs, not folks who were idahoing them. On the other hand I have heard cyclists contest the truth of that claim. Leaving aside the question of veracity, it does seem possible to speak about the difference, at least in some environments – though a better defined vocabulary would surely help.
I received one ticket in Old Town about 6 years during a crack-down when the officer recognized that I had slowed down, and a couple of lectures/warnings in Old Town and DC. That being said, I think it is better to ride considerately, look out for police officers, and hope for the best (although a full stop is always an option).

Yes, in theory. In practice, it’s a bit more complicated.
If you use Strava, all miles from the past 12 months will be picked up and counted. If you use Endomondo, only the past 16 workouts will be picked up and counted. If you use MapMyRide, only the past 7 days will be picked up and counted. If you use Moves, only the past 6 days will be picked up and counted.
The easiest way to do this is obviously to use Strava. If you use other apps, you can manually enter miles for past periods. However, this is enough of a hassle that it’s best to use Strava if you can.
If you’re using a Garmin, and not already using Strava, it’s easy to start. You can upload the miles directly to Strava. Or you can upload them to the Garmin site (go to this page and click “Import” in the upper right), and then have them synced with Strava.
If you are not using a Garmin, and have been using some program other than Strava to log your miles, let me know, and I can give you programs that can sync to Strava from various other programs.
I’ve used Strava since I signed up for NBC, and just joined the WAAS. So hopefully my points transferred over smoothly.

ParticipantIf I join WAAS now, do my points and miles I’ve previously accumulated transfer over?

ParticipantWas this any good for night time trail riding? I go from my office in DC across the 14th Street Bridge on the MVT to the Belle View area, slightly under an hour riding time with traffic lights.

ParticipantSorry about the bike. There’s been a lot of discussions about the efficacy of locks and I sometimes lock up a bike in that area. How was it locked up?
(tried to reply once before so apologies if this is a duplicate)

Anyone else having trouble syncing with Strava today? I tried syncing, and it said it had synced, but showed no miles. When this has happened in the past, I’ve been able to fix it by deauthorizing and reauthorizing Strava, so I tried that. I got an error message when I tried to reauthorize, but then it again showed as authorized. But it still isn’t syncing.
It worked fine for me this afternoon (maybe around 2).

Also be sure the noise is actually coming from the brakes and not your shoulder joint. Just saying…
I had a clicking sound on one of my prior bikes whenever I climbed a steep hill, and was relieved when I found it was my bottom bracket and not my right knee.

ParticipantI’m thinking of doing the Civil War Century (75-mile variant) but its still pretty far away. I will probably post something in August but may be up for training rides in July (because the temp. will be so pleasant). Hopefully, the other contributors to this board will post things as their plans get more concrete is they are looking for riding buddies.

ParticipantThere is the Civil War Century, which has shorter variations. I’ve never done it, but it sounds cool, especially if you enjoy history.http://www.civilwarcentury.com/

ParticipantI would be happy if NPS or the foundation could do something about the wooden bridges, which I understand may be part of the land swap deal with Alexandria. I saw a woman take a spill on the bridge by the power plant today. Those bridges are starting to remind me of the kite-eating trees that plagued Charlie Brown in Peanuts

Pre-booked tours are totally sold out. That said I’m still heading down to see her on Friday. Departure is late, late Friday pm. I heard going back under the WW bridge around mid-night Fri/Sat.
I spoke to some of the crew members and they said the WW Bridge won’t open before midnight. Va. DOT posts opening times for the bridge, so hopefully there will some useful information there (nothing posted as of Thurs. morning).
