I’ll be there! :) (And, wanna know a secret? I’m a HUGE introvert. Seriously. I invite everyone down to HP then spend 3 days afterwards recovering from all the extrovert effort I have to put in.)

    We are doing handups slightly different this year to make it less of a frenetic experience. Only a couple people will be on the right side doing it. Left side will be for passing. I have plenty of handups so everyone will have a chance. (And, I’m going to be encouraging the fast groups to hang to the left, etc. etc.)

    Hope ya’ll can make it down there because my house is full to bustin’ with swag!

    Thanks so much for posting this Judd! And, you are absolutely correct – by signing up beforehand it helps me know how many to expect (for some of the in-kind donations this is key!) and 2) if we change the date (please no ice!) we can let everyone know and 3) helps me organize day-of lines for those that have registered and those that have not (and want to give on site).

    A bit of background, the Hains Point 100 was started 6 years ago to help support the (then non-existent) Washington Area Bicyclist Association’s Women & Bicycles program. This year it will be held on December 17th and encourages riders to ride the Hains Point 3 mile loop as many times as they can. Doing a 3-mile loop can get a little boring so to entertain us during this event, there are giveaways, hand-ups, food, and freebies from generous supporters. The Hains Point 100 is open to all riders of all ages and all bikes and biking abilities. Over the years this event has attracted hundreds and hundreds of riders and it has raised thousands of dollars. Since 2013, the Women & Bicycles group has grown to over 6700 women and has inspired women to not only ride their bikes but to become leaders, educators and advocates within the cycling community.

    If you’d like to sign-up go to http://www.HainsPoint100.com. If you can’t make it you can still donate through that website.

    There is also a huge list of FAQs on the website that will give you a sense of what to expect day-of and what the “agenda” is for the day – besides have fun!

    Right now this is a list of all the business supporters of the Hains Point 100…and it’s still growing! You can follow along as to what they all have donated on the official Hains Point 100 Facebook event page.

    I don’t know what caused either crash. However,

    As noted, the first crash near the start happened in the underpass. Passing through there on the next laps I looked at pavement there and it seemed to be freshly paved. It was sunny and then became extremely dark underneath (as an overpass tends to do). That’s all I can report on in terms of conditions as I was behind the crash and didn’t see it happen. There seemed to be people down on both sides of the course since at that point, no one was coming the other way, yet.

    The 2nd (major) crash happened after the freshly paved downhill section ended and old pavement began. It occurred at the point where the most speed would occur at the bottom of that hill. Again, I didn’t see it happen and just reporting on the condition of road/pavement and location. When I went by I only saw two riders on the ground. I did not see the hurt police officer (but also was looking in the road to avoid the cyclists and bad pavement). There were police officers stationed at the gap in the median when we went by. If an officer was involved, I could only surmise that the first rider went down after hitting some bad pavement and the police officer went over to assist…but that is a complete assumption.

    *raises hand meekly* But, I was injured and had surgery and couldn’t participate even on the Slacker team in 2015. Lemme on the slacker team this year…pleeeeease. :)

    (Stealing from the WABA messaging…but, with a purpose, we need people to show up!)

    The Arlington County Board is holding a public hearing on the transportation budget on Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 pm.

    The public hearing will be held in County Board room at 2100 Clarendon Blvd. Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22201.

    There are some key folks signed up to testify early in the hearing. A speaker early on will ask all residents in attendance who supporting biking to stand up.

    A strong showing of support is needed.

    Come at 7:00 pm and stand for biking.

    ~~~
    Adding to WABA message: 2100 Clarendon has tons of bike racks outside. Close to bikeshare. Close to Metro. Close to eating establishments that serve beer. What more could you ask for?
    Great stuff! The Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee has actually been around much longer than 2012…we can probably find some back history on that. (I know because my first Monday of the month has been occupied by the BAC meetings much longer than since 2012.) ;)
    I would like to apologize to my non-existent teammates. Didn’t sign up this year because I have to have surgery on my Achilles on the 29th. I knew it was coming and didn’t want to take a slot up and have to apologize for realz. But, I’ll be ready to go in 2016! (Also, I did ride my bike in to work today…can I gift points to someone?) ;)
    I’m going to count those that signed-in later today but for now…estimating maybe 300? Thanks for everyone coming out and supporting the ride. Getting ready for this event is such a ride in itself and now I’ve got to stop swirling!
    I can also update that the person who fell, with ambulance called, is just fine. She stopped by later to let us know. She didn’t go to the hospital. All good. Just abundance of caution! Her bike got checked out by Handy Bikes DC and with a few little adjustments is just fine, too.
    (Re: tickets, I got one last summer at HP. They never entered it into the system for me to pay. So, according to the ticket I received, after a certain time it’s null and void if not entered into the system. Also, it was from the NPS and not DC so even if it was put into the system, it wouldn’t show up on my license as points or anything…no connection.)
