ParticipantAlso, we hit another milestone, the Killer Bees have ridden over 10,000 miles since the beginning of May. (10,124 to be exact).

ParticipantI totally think that Strava should allow for extra points if you indicate things like, “I was carrying a full load of groceries in my front basket, backpack and a six pack of Fat Tire Ale strapped to my back rack”, or, “I was in heels, a floppy hat and a dress that required me to take my hands off the handlebar when the wind almost made the ride indecent”, or, “I just ate a full bowl of Tofu Panang Curry and still managed to chug home up that hill.”

ParticipantLookin’ gooooood!

ParticipantNice! As someone who’s done it, I have always thought that anyone that rides a bike in heels more than five miles should get triple Strava points or a free foot massage.

ParticipantLooking at the national leaderboard I’m seeing The Killer B’s are 8th for the entire period and 13th just looking at June. I’m seeing the A-Team at 15th, C-Team is 38th. (Not a bad showing considering there are 2507 total teams!)
I think when we look “locally” we all see different people making up the teams based on where our profiles are set. For example, when I pull up using the local screen, I don’t see Pete either individually or included in the B-Team because he’s rounded into another area/zip code…and, Pete’s our Killer Bee King!

ParticipantI also think that some of the laps weren’t actually “laps”. There were a few people we would go by that were skipping going up the Air Force Hill and were just completing a smaller lap…they may have clocked in faster and managed more laps?
I can vouch that even when Tim was spent, he still sprinted up the Air Force Hill to fetch me water so his slower laps should be given “extra credit”. Also, I totally made an attack move on DaveK at the feed zone. (Ok, I really thought he was in front of me and I totally missed he had stopped. It wasn’t until near Rosslyn that he caught up with me and shook his fist at my “impoliteness”. Whoops!) But for all the drafting and in-ride entertainment, he should also be given extra credit, too.

ParticipantWait a minute! We were right next to you! I’m the stunned one wearing a pink shirt and white hat at the end of your video. You can see I move my hands off the rail because I thought, too, “Oh, s(*&t! Did I stick my head out too far?!?”

ParticipantWhen I go through Key Boulevard in the mornings, it’s rather nice to stop behind the bus and get waved at by the kids in the back of the bus. Then, when I face a bus head-on that’s stopped in the other lane, it’s rather nice to get waved at by the bus driver in appreciation for stopping. I hope I’m setting a good example…
I’m amazed at how many cars will fly through a stop sign and navigate a traffic circle in front of a stopped and loading school bus. Kids are slippery and can appear out of no where. I wouldn’t take the chance.
(On another note, I’m also amazed at all the cars running and idling at the bus stop every day with their kid inside while other kids are standing outside in the elements. I understand if you have a science project or something you don’t want to get wet on the rainy days…but every day when you only live a block away from the stop? But, that’s another discussion for another day, I suppose.)

ParticipantHrm, I didn’t see any other cyclists but me out there this morning on the way to Rosslyn. However, it was strangely smoggy/dusty a lot more than usual around the construction sites, so perhaps everyone was hidden in the “mist”?

ParticipantCrystal Ride was awesome this year. I liked the course a lot better without the hinky hairpins. Also, the pavement was in great shape (except for that little, inconveniently placed, scary pothole right before the climb of Air Force Hill).
I would be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to my two super-domestiques – Tim and Dave K – who kept me going at a great pace to earn the gold medal at just about 3 hours. (If you saw Tim in the flat sections around lap three and onwards, then that was me tucked in right behind him…)

ParticipantI believe it was 2008…?

ParticipantEven with no bike valet, there are plenty of spots to lock up your bike around the course. Head into one of the side streets and you should have no problem at all.
