Took a spill right here this morning, but miraculously landed on my feet. Rear derailleur’s not so happy though.
There’s a black ice patch going downhill (if you’re going east) just before the Glebe overpass, right after I got on from George Mason. Took a nice body slide down the rest of the hill into the snow. All overpasses and concrete surfaces on the Custis were frozen, especially the ramp near TR Island. If you have to ride in this morning, avoid the trails.

Wanted to confirm, the brakes are mechanical disc and not hydraulic or mechanical pull/hydraulic piston hybrid?

Yea, I recently installed TRP Hy/Rd hybrids and noticed in the serious cold I get a ton of play in my rear brake about 2 minutes into my ride. Good as new after a few minutes of letting the bike warm up. I’m thinking some combination of the hydraulics cooling and the length of cable involved – again, only happens in the rear. The good news is it still works, just gotta squeeze extra hard. Would be strange in a full mechanical though.

–The streets I rode in VA and DC were in good shape.
–The WOD was cleared! Not all the way down to the pavement, but it helps nonetheless…. I yelled thank-you to the guys in the vehicle. I rode the WOD from Patrick Henry to Shirlington.
–Be careful crossing George Mason…there are some slippery bits as you enter the street.
–Four Mile Run from Shirlington to the MVT is completely clear.
–The MVT is fine, for the most part. As others have noted, the wind did a good job in removing some of the snow. Exercise caution in locations where the trail runs parallel to the road. There’s some icy pavement beneath the snow, perhaps due to moisture from the roadway. The most slippery areas were alongside the airport (e.g., in the narrow trail area between the wire fence and the road) and the trail along the highway near Roosevelt Island.
–Key Bridge was cleared and salted. Yay!
–The Crescent Trail was neither plowed nor treated. Snow is deeper in the forested areas. This trail could become more challenging in the coming days if it ices over.
Be safe everyone.
w&wSeconding on the MVT and 4MR for anyone still looking to get home. As of 5pm, MVT still snow-covered by TR Island and the airport. Go slow and low gear it around there.
