I have a Crateworks case you can borrow. It has been to SE Asia and India multiple times with no damage to the bike. Normally I can make the weight limit of 50lbs for international flight with the case, steel Gunnar Rock Tour bike with rear rack and Salsa Anything cages, tools, and some clothes.

Reporting back now that I’ve actually started my new job and have all the requisite badges, etc. There is a very small shower room on the premises on the middle level of the parking garage. Contrary to what I was told, there is no “checking” of credentials to use. So I can resume my daily bike commute!

Thanks everyone for helping and the information.

South Island of New Zealand is great. Roads tend to be narrow though with no shoulders and traffic can be fast. The South Island is much less populated than the North Island though so you can get away from the traffic somewhat. Hands down NZ is the country where I’ve seen more blind corner overtaking in cars so you have to be careful. Best riding is on the farm roads though. Also keep in mind that Fall is their Spring so depending upon when you plan on going might still be cold.

Air New Zealand, last time I looked, will take your bike as one piece of luggage which is a huge advantage. Don’t know about Quantas.

You haven’t indicated what you are looking for in regards to a cycling vacation. To me that means leaving the country and heading somewhere really remote. Fall is a great time ride in the Himalayas, either Nepal or India. Also a good time to ride from Lhasa to Kathmandu passing Mount Everest along the way, though you’ll have to hire a guide since China doesn’t allow independent travel in Tibet anymore. I’ve ridden in the Indian Himalayas a few times and will be going back in Sept for another month of riding The monsoon is past by then (so you can actually GET to the mountains), the weather is still nice, and the harvest is on preparing for the long winter. It is remote, rough, and high (13,000ft-17,000ft) but spectacular.

Greenbelt: Thanks. That would be great.

I did check with the Mandarin Oriental and they do offer fitness center access with a one time fee of $1,000 and a $295/month fee. I believe I’m going to pass on that option!

I won’t be a federal employee and I’ve been told that location does not have a gym/locker room facility I can use. I would have to go to another agency building about 8 blocks away which does have a locker room I can use. Waterside might be an option (one I never knew about) but it is about the same distance away (i.e. far) as the other agency building where I do have access. I don’t need a full shower, just access to a sink and electrical outlets (for a hair dryer).

I guess I’ll check out the options at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Might be able to gain access to their gym and facilities.
